Should Schools Make Gym Class Optional?

In Denver, CO some schools are making gym class optional, why is because apparently that time could be used for learning in class. Others state that Gym gives students exercise, rests their brain, and shows them how to stay fit. What do you think?

It should not be optional! Though I do believe they should make gym class work better for everyone of different physical ability. The overall goal of gym class should be to help students learn about ways to stay healthy and to improve their overall health. It should be required so that students are at least informed of ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle whether they choose to do so or not. It shouldn't be optional because students should be informed of their options.

Physical health is as important as knowledge.

Learning how to stay healthy is what health class is for.

The exercises in the majority of gym classes that I know of are jokes, practically gym class does little to improve most students' health.

i disagree because many people exercise out side of school i get 6 hours a week on average of swimming vs the 1.5 to 2.25 hours of gym were you don't even utilize all of that time. Now yes knowing ways to stay healthy and improve over all heath is important but there are plenty of other classes were you can do that like culinary classes.

Gym class and recess should be mandatory in schools due to the obesity epidemic! If children could get more exercise and playtime maybe we could help overweight children shed the unneeded extra pounds!!

No, its good for them. It gets the blood flowing to the brain and the body

Exercise strengthens the gene pool. It's not gonna hurt'em.

People need exercise more than they need algebra, science and history courses but those are mandatory .

If Gym is optional then make every other course optional.

In primary school it should be mandatory for two important reasons:

(1) Show children the wide range of sports that are available, in the hopes that they'll find something they like and continue playing it to stay fit

(2) Ensure sedentary children get some exercise now and then.

Sometime by high school it should become an optional subject.

1)Sports are inherit in society, in some cultures the schools themselves have over 50% of their facilities dedicated to sports. The marketing for professional sports, the numerous parks for sports, etc all expose people enough that they are aware of their options. Gym class is redundant for showing the wide range of sports that are available.

2) The exercise in most gym classes are not very beneficial, and if they are; merely having them now and then nullify their benefit.

While sports and fitness marketing does exist, marketing that go against sports and fitness is just as powerful, if not more powerful: conveniences that encourage people to be physically lazy, wide availability of food contributing to obesity, huge number of non-physical hobbies that may well overshadow physical hobbies in attractiveness. Instead of leaving the next generation to the whims of marketers, I am advocating taking the proactive stance and encourage children to be healthy.

Also, actually trying out various sports is a completely different experience from merely hearing about how good a sport is. Many families don't value fitness enough, and won't encourage their children to try sports. Many other families simply don't have the resources or energy to let their children try one sport after another until they find something they enjoy. But a school is well-equipped to show children dozens of fitness options.

The rest of your arguments aren't related to the appropriateness of having mandatory PE classes, but to the way PE is currently taught at school. I do agree that many - if not most - PE curricula could use a lot of improvement. I also agree that in some countries PE is overvalued to the point of neglecting other subjects. But that's no argument for saying that there shouldn't be mandatory PE; it just means PE classes can use a revamp.

Also, the benefits of exercise are not "nullified" if you don't exercise as often as some people. They are lessened, that's all. Studies are showing that even exercising for a few minutes a week can lower your chances of developing health issues. More exercise than that, and the appropriate types of exercise, will be even more useful.

I personaly think that it should, because music and art class are, so why not gym class?

I had always hated physical education at school. I personally think that gym class should be optional at school; I would much rather engage in physical activity at my own choice than to do it in the presence of other people. I am not very sporty myself, so it was really demotivating and unfair to be put with people who were rather sporty.

yes it should be optional because some boys don't like music and some girls don't like gym. That's why we should make gym and music class optional!!

music is lame we need more fitness if were not going to be fat it should be optional so we can choose to go somewhere we like. I like gym myself except for the square dancing unit.

Side: Yes, it should be optional

There are plenty of students who don't like Gym, so, a student should not be compelled to take it.
