Should Something Be Done About Celebrities?
the way that celebrities seem to be huge role models or large parts of entertainment. this perhaps gives them a great responsibility as influencers of children particularly.

I think it was Keith Richards that said that there wasn't a Dummies Book on being a celebrity when they started out so they just had to wing it. I guess that is the main issue when we elevate people to stardom without training wheels and then expect them to be role models. Tough ask. Side: Stop It

While I agree that celebrities in general tend to reflect celebration of qualities and accomplishments of questionable value at best, and are most likely an overall negative affect on our culture... I couldn't support any legislation that could do something about 'celebrities,' due to the nature of celebrity. Celebrities don't make themselves- they are made by the attention and adulation of their fans- often with the assistance of marketing, but still. As such, any legislation to control 'celebrities' would in practice either be applied to citizens in general as a restriction of their freedom of self-expression amongst other things, or to the marketing process that enables 'artificial celebrity' for lack of a better term. I mean seriously, even if it could be proven that celebrities are destroying our society, do you really think that fame/notoriety can be legislated away? Seems to me that all we can realistically do is deal with it, try to promote good ideas and values within our families and communities, and hope for the best. Side: It's Fine
In the case of entertainment celebrities I don't think it matters, since John Wayne and Roy Rogers are already dead. Sports celebrities tend to be a little more idolized by children than do other types of celebrities but I don't think it conveys upon them any particular responsibility. Political celebrities ----- never mind. Side: It's Fine
