Should War and Peace be a required book to read?

Leo Tolstoy is credited with writing 1 of the greatest books that have ever been written ( obviously excluding the Bible ). It is required in some High Schools and most colleges to read, should we have to read War and Peace?

War and Peace may be a hard book to get through but all in all it is a fantastic book if you understand it. The book shows you the troubled life of a few select individuals. Tolstoy uses mostly historically accurate information regarding Napoleon's invasion of Russia. The only unhistoricaly accurate part of that book is when Napoleon is looking over the bridge as the Russians demolish his remaining army. The demolishing part is true but Napoleon was not there.

It is a book that makes you think, people want a book that is easy to understand with simple vocabulary. The same people that will disagree with me on that statement probably do not like Shakespeare either. War and Peace should be a required book since it covers the important aspects of life. The book shows sadness, happiness, love, cruelty and religion. What more does a book need?

It is a book that is good for the aggrandizement of a young mind in high school. I feel that the book merely makes people think. Since when should a book that has a mastered use of the English language be decided to not be read in high school or college. If it is required already doesn't that mean it is required for a good reason?

Why are classics required reading? One reason. You read to write. If you would write well, you must read thoroughly. There is no other way to learn to write well.

Good point. And as demonstrated on this site, neither reading nor writing seem to be a priority anymore.

War and Peace was a grade killer for my jr. year. I am also not an idiot. I was an A-B student throughout high school and the only book that I was not able to grasp was War and Peace. The book to me was to complicated and boring. Tolstoy uses the war to drag on hundreds of useless pages about Pierre and what not. The whole book was a waste of time for me in High School.

I did read "War and Peace" on my own but it is a very lengthy novel and it would be a challenge for all students to read. So, if this book is mandated, perhaps it should be the only required book to read for an entire semester.

I don't think that a book killing a student's grades is really a legitimate reason for that book not to be required.

Grades are important, but not at the cost of an education.

For example, the no child left behind act, instead of encouraging smarter kids, encourages schools to dumb down the curriculum so "no child is left behind."

Not that that is the case where you're concerned, getting A's and B's is really good, it's just a general observation.

I know for myself, I graduated high school with a 3.8 and scored a 1470 on my SAT's (before the scores were recalibrated to make it easier, back then 1470 was pretty damn good)

But I found that in my freshman year of college, I was woefully unprepared for the amount of study and knowledge required to keep up.

My high school had made it easy for everyone, and so everyone was "left behind," so to speak.

I wasn't even required to read "War and Peace." :)

War and Peace is too good a book to be required reading. It is far too intricate, complex, detailed. I thought it was an amazing book but assigning it to a senior class would result in a group of bored students unwilling to labor through it far enough for it to mean something to them.

That's like telling students to read one of their textbooks from beginning to end, except that it is probably longer than most of their textbooks.

Side: No, that book is BORING

No, that book has, like, three page long paragraphs, and it's annoying as hell.
