Should We Adopt This Practice

I see a lot of people here accuse others of misquoting them, but frequently it doesn't look like the accuser was misquoted at all.  Should anyone who accuses someone of misquoting them actually say what was misquoted?

I was in a couple debates recently and the other person accused me of misquoting them. I still have no idea what they were talking about. How is anyone supposed to know what the person is talking about?

I agree, isn't it annoying when people say that what they said was out of context, when it wasn't! High five :)

Side: Right Thing To Do

People should just respect your authoritah ;)

Damn right!

In my opinion they should. I have a poor memory, and many debates can get quite lengthy. If there are any misunderstandings I'd like to be 'pointed' in the right direction so that I can refute or apologize accordingly, without straining myself to figure out what's going on.

It is a much better way to clarify it it.

If the quote is a portion of what was written I think the person misquoting should know that they are doing it.

If the response takes into account everything you said, you weren't misquoted.

If the quote is one or two words out of the whole sentence, and does not address the point you are bring up, it's a misquote. For example:

takes into account everything

Yet you response does not take everything I said into account, you misquoted.

You are so annoying. You dispute just to be rude. .

I don't think so. That is a slippery slope; if people start explaining why they feel there were misquoted, the person they are fighting with might be able to understand the miscommunication and worse yet might be able to clarify their point. Then people are exchanging ideas efficiently, then there could spawn some form of structured arguments and next thing you know you got a full on logical debate on your hands. It's just too risky, nobody here wants that.

So true, all the best arguments on here are because nobody understands the person they are arguing with.
