Should bullies in schools have a stronger consequence?

Bullying is a common thing, but has a big affect on some people, do you think schools are being too soft?

Yes. Children need to be taught how and when to defend themselves. They need to be fought when and how to be offended. They need to be taught when and how to defend others. And most importantly, they need to not be punished when they do the right thing in a bully situation.

This will create stronger social sanctions against bullies. But it would take a shift in culture, not just policy.

To make sure I'm understanding you, you're saying the consequence should be the victim actually defending themselves?

In part. The victim should defend their self, or if unable, someone else should step in and defend them. Victimhood is a circumstance to be personally avoided. If there is strength to spare after personally avoiding it, then victimhood should be a circumstance to protect others from.

There should be more emphasis on the anti-victim rather than the victim so as to encourage a culture of victim avoidance rather than victim celebration. A popular modern perspective is that you are either a victim or a victimizer. This is part of the problem.

It worked for thousands of years. Is this generation better? They seem to actually be more confused, weaker, and stupider. Perhaps the Spartans could teach the new generation a thing or two, like "life isn't fair". "Man up or die". And "Quit making excuses".

They need to quit being taught to be offended by everything because life is offensive. Their boss will offend them. Their political rivals will offend them. Life itself will offend them.

Side: No

It's not a common thing here, though.

In colleges it used to be (as ragging), but it's been outlawed a few years ago.

It depends on a case by case basis, including age of course, but what I've never understood is why repeat bullying over a span of years doesn't result in actual legal actions up to and including:

Disqualification from public education

Fines and restitutions

Mandatory community service

Permanent marks on transcripts

Mandatory counseling/psychology

Often the whole school knows certain kids are the problem but no one feels they can do anything to make them stop, and after a decade of skating by they're just trained menaces to society.

I am a big proponent of mandatory community service if repeated warning to cease bullying someone doesn't work. After that I think there should be some monetary compensations as punishments tend to work best when it depletes the parent's wallet.

I do however believe that the cause of bullying needs to be looked at on this case by case basis. Why is this happening? Why does this kid feel justified in bullying someone, and what can be done about it? Also, at what point does the victim have the right to stand up for themselves. There have been so many instances where the victim fought back and was punished for it which to me is the wrong call.

It takes at least two parties for bullies to exist.

That is, the bully and the person(s) who permit themselves to be bullied.

Verbal bullying can be easily countered.

Physical bullying can be squashed by lifting the nearest convenient heavy object and busting it over the teeth of the bully.

As bullies are invariably, inherently cowardly scumbags they won't be coming back for more.

If you haven't got the balls to do that, then remember, 'there is more than one way to skin a cat'.

So, there always has been bullies and there always will be bullies.

Everyone has to realize this fact from an early age and learn how to deal with it on a mano-a-mano basis.
