Should children be allowed to have their own and use mobile phones?

Mobile telephones are widespread with almost every adult in all developed countries, despite the fact that mobile phones have existed only 20 years ago. Mobile phones make our life easier, with a help of them we can use a wide variety of functions, such as taking and sending photographs and video, playing music and games, and even surfing the internet. Their main use, however, have possibility for voice calls and for texting short messages. This have raised questions about whether children should be able to own phones, and if they should be allowed to take them into school. However schools in different countries have very different views on this issue. In some students can carry them as they like, even during lessons. Other schools allow carry them only if they will be turned off in school hours.

I don't think children should have advance phones. Children should have those phones that can only call about three numbers for emergencies though.

Mobile phones are safe for children to use – we should ignore terrible stories in the media. The latest research says that mobile phones do not damage brain cells. Even earlier studies had suggested that there is might be a problem if people use a cell phone for 8-9 hours a day there will be definitely negative effect. It is true, but I do not think that a small children will use mobile phones for such long-term hours.

teenagers should be given 2 use phones because as we all know that india is developing fast ......... through mobiles sitting in the home we can get the information about the world which is very good for the children......... and we should also walk with the time and developing world.we all think that children should not use mobiles so we should remind that mobile is not bad but the usage is bad .......... so, we should check ourselves and make the good use of mobile ...............................

Yes, scientists did not 100% proved that using mobile phones are harmful. If it really was, they will already proof it, so let's turn to another advantage of using mobile phone among children.

Mobile phones keep children safer, as it is easier for parents to stay in touch with their children. Through calls and texts, parents can know where their child is and be sure that he or she is safe. And in an emergency, young people can call for a help quickly and easily.

Yes, some children carrying phones have been robbed, but thieves are always looking something new. And parents do not always buy the latest model of Iphone, for example, to their children, because it is too expensive and of course, they understand that their child can just lose it.

Another argument for using mobile phones among young people is because they are now a valuable part of student life. Parents feel their children are safer carrying a phone and they allow them to travel to school on their own rather then driving them to school. This promotes greater independence for the children.

Mobile phones should not be banned; however they can be turned off in lesson.

I believe that they should be able to utilize phones.

I think this way, because essentially, It could save someones life. My father had told me a story about a young preteen who was kidnapped on her way home from school. The man had thrown her in his car, tied her up, and bought her home with him.

After they were at his house, he brought her to his basement. He bound her with almost prison like shackles around her hands and feet.

After her captor left, she realized that she still had her cellphone in her pocket. After most likely wriggling like a madman for hours, she produced her phone from her pocket.

Since she couldn't call, (he would over hear her) she used the tips of her toes to text her mother, who called police. They traced the call signal back to that house, and she was rescued.

This new age technology isn't all that bad, we just need to teach them how to use it!

I think it is normal if childrren use mobile phones. Nowadays it's very necessary thing. At any moment something can always happen, so it's worth Owned give their children cell phones. With them they can call their parents.

Side: Children should use

Yes but only if its function is to make calls and thats it. No internet, no photo taking, no annoying text messaging. None of that crap. Just phone calls and only phone calls.

Children definitely should have a mobile phone to stay in touch with parents, to tell ahead what they are planing to do or where they are planing to go...It is the matter of safety

Also nowadays it is impossible to live without a cell phone... Imagine that you don't know where your child is, what he is doing, is everything OK with him, you would be so stressed and feared about what's going on with him. You won't have a way to connect your child... To avoid this situation parents must buy their children cell phones, so that they will be sure that everything is going fine with their children...I don't say that children should have expensive phones like IPhone or Galaxy, but a usual phone to call parents and let them know what's going on with them

It really depends on the maturity of the child. If the child is trustworthy, it can be a lifesaver and get the child out of trouble someday, but if they aren't... well you know the answer!

I think children should use devices because children can learn things in them and many more things.

Side: Children should use

TLDR: Basic phone yes, Smartphone no, because no unsupervised internet access for my kids until I feel they're old enough.

I don't see any problem with children having a basic phone for making calls/sending SMS messages from, both to talk to their friends and to keep in touch with parents when on field trips, visiting others, etc- even just to notify mom that soccer practice ended early and the kid needs a ride.

I draw the line at smartphones, though. I don't believe that children should have unsupervised internet access (for a number of reasons), and don't intend to allow such to my son until I decide otherwise; I'm not committing to a specific age, more a loosely-defined set of standards regarding his mental development. Given how ineffectual various controls one can put on a smartphone are, it pretty much entails giving the kid unsupervised internet access even if you intend otherwise.

Case in point: I know better than to trust parental controls to do the job- I was 12 years old when Surfwatch (the first commercial filter/parental control software, think Net Nanny and the like) was first released, and it took me no time at all to figure out how to temporarily disable it, as well as several of its successors. Even bypassing corporate filters is easy enough given the know-how, which is out there to find.

Even if the phone has no data plan, it still has a wifi module.

Ultimately, though, most of the 'smart' of a smartphone comes from its 'always-connected' state. There is little use for a smartphone that never accesses the internet above and beyond what a standard mobile phone provides.

I believe that children SHOULD be allowed to have and use their own mobile phone. Mobile phones can be very handy and especially useful in an emergency situation where they need to contact someone quickly. Furthermore, with how many smartphones there are nowadays, children can keep themselves entertained on their mobile phones through many different applications.

Should children be allowed to have their own and use mobile phones?

These are my Balanced Arguments:

Children should not have a mobile phone . However, children like to talk on the phone. Often this creates tension between children and their parents. The question often becomes “should children be allowed to have their own and use mobile phones”

The topic for discussion today is ‘should children be allowed to have their own and use mobile phones’

I would like to put forward the arguments that children should have a mobile phone.

Children should have there own mobile phone so that the children themselves will have the freedom to have their own mobile phone and be more independent. Secondly, children know how much time he/she needs and when they are tired. Thirdly, children know the children’s family circumstances (ex. child might have slept very early).

On the other hand, children shouldn’t have mobile phones and not look at it for too long so that children will be healthy and strong. Children who does not look at the mobile phone for too long can also focus better at school the next day.

On balance, I believe children should have freedom and can look at their mobile phones.

I think children should be able to use a mobile phone because it is educational in the way of fact files Wikipedia etc. and there parents can locate them if they have there phone on them. yes too long on a phone is not good for them but if they know better they would go do something else and take a break from it.

I think they should because parents can track their phone and see where they are if they get lost, also if they get stuck in class and they’re confused, they can research it and that way they won’t need to ask the teacher so the teacher can continue with there work instead of being distracted. So it’s a ‘Win,Win’.

Don't u think that mobile phones make children less safe???

Firstly they are carrying an expensive fashion item that makes them a target for criminals. Millions of people are robbed of cell phones every year, sometimes with violence.

Secondly, many children spend so much time talking on the phone or texting and they don't aware what is going on around them. Each year children cause car accidents because their attention was on their phone conversation, not the traffic while crossing the street.

Yeah, I'm sure someone is going to want to rob me of my $20 phone I got at Kmart.

Secondly, many children spend so much time talking on the phone or texting and they don't aware what is going on around them.

Yep, for sure, they just get sucked into the phone and are unaware of anything else

No, Mobile phones should be banned, because they take students’ attention away from their lessons and destroys discipline.

Mobile phones are inappropriate in schools. Rules about having them turned off in lessons are impossible to enforce because some “smart” students just put them in silent mode and successfully text or play games in the back of the class. There have been many cases of students using mobiles to cheat in tests, and some of students recording and taking different photos from teachers and then post on the internet. Schools are for learning and anything which gets in the way of that should be banned.

No, Mobile phones should be banned, because they take students’ attention away from their lessons and destroys discipline.

Okay, what???? So should we ban video games because kids should be doing homework instead? Should we ban tv because that's a distraction as well? Should we ban sex because teenagers think about it too much? See how flawed your pathetic argument is? Grow up.

Mobile phones are inappropriate in schools. Rules about having them turned off in lessons are impossible to enforce because some “smart” students just put them in silent mode and successfully text or play games in the back of the class.

Then that is their choice to do so, if they want to fail they have every right to.

There have been many cases of students using mobiles to cheat in tests,

To be recorded they would've had to be caught, so I don't see the problem here

Schools are for learning and anything which gets in the way of that should be banned.

Your argument is centered around why kids shouldn't have phones in school. THIS DEBATE is whether kids should own phones at all. You are off topic and your arguments are flawed and biased without any real evidence.

I disagree with you, because there are possible long-term health risks from using mobile phones, especially in children usage. Some research suggests that the radio waves from mobile phones may harm people’s brains. Because children’s brains are still developing, any possible damage to them is even more worrying than for adults. Until science can prove mobile phones are completely safe for young people to use, they should not be allowed to have them.

I'd say it's just risky for them. Most kids of curse wants a iPhone or a Galaxy but instead of giving them a phone you could give them device which can help them study. Like a e Reader

I think children should not have a phone because if a parent give them a phone basically what the parent is telling the kid here's a phone now get out of my face. Why do kids need a phone? Who are they going to call/text? Did you know why the people made phones? It was because that adults could use them and not kids. Also already kids my age are starting to have glasses because they are too busy texting or looking at a screen for long periods of time. Also it is a distraction to learning and even if they have homework they will be more focused on there phone then there work.

what the parent is telling the kid here's a phone now get out of my face.

There is no evidence for this, at all.

Why do kids need a phone? Who are they going to call/text?

Their friends so that they can socialize maybe? Keep in contact with their work (like I did when I was younger) perhaps? Or be able to call their parent, but ya know, that isn't important is it?

Did you know why the people made phones? It was because that adults could use them and not kids.

Incorrect, they were made to make life easier for everybody; and they do.

Also already kids my age are starting to have glasses because they are too busy texting or looking at a screen for long periods of time.

Kids have needed glasses ever since they have been invented, and yet again, there is no proof of what you are claiming.

Also it is a distraction to learning and even if they have homework they will be more focused on there phone then there work.

AND YET AGAIN, no evidence for this.

Just out of curiosity; you are a kid, yes? Are you actually an overprotective, insecure parent trapped inside the body of a kid or what? Seriously, I'm not trying to offend you or anything, but what kid thinks like that? ...Are you Amish?

Nope I am a Christian. I don't really need a phone at this age my parents tell me because they tell me I don't really need a phone and they say what will I need it for? I am fine with what I have and I am happy because really I don't need a phone because I see so many people in my school addictated to there phone and they get glasses because they are focused on a screen. Me I don't have any glasses and I have a limited time of screen time everyday because I don't want to have glasses. I have a good vision and sometime I hear people my age saying in the back of the classroom saying I can't see because they are too busy looking on a screen.

first, see the function of mobile phone. mobile phone be used to communicate two direction. then, wheter child need it? i think's they just use it to call their moms, exactly mom will call them. but, most of the parents do not have heart to let them be alone, the parents should keep them not far away. so they do not require a mobile phone.

I believe that children shouldn`t use mobile phones. First reason is health damage. As we know these mobile phones, gadgets and other devices produce a lot of radiation. Using phones daily can damage our health. I can damage child`s brain and ears. So, after some years they`ll have problems with hearing. Second reason is distraction. If children have phones, they`ll use it at schools. And they will play and they will not pay attention to the lesson.

According to Dr Kurt Straif of the IARC "The strongest evidence really comes from the studies of cancer in humans and there was some evidence that there may be an association between the use of mobile cell-phones and certain types of brain cancer","There is also some evidence that exposure in children may be up to two-fold higher because of the different biology and other factors that influence exposure, therefore it may be prudent to restrict it further to kids and take these pragmatic measures more seriously," he added.

Cell phones should not be allowed during school because they would provide distractions for students, allow for cheating on tests, and for other social reasons. If a student's cell phone rang during class,it would obviously distract him or her from the class and whatever the teacher is teaching. If this continued,it could prove detrimental to that student's education. It could also be distracting to other students, for if someone was talking on the phone while the teacher was talking,it would be difficult for the students to focus during their lessons.

 Too young: Children are still too young to use phones. They still can’t decide what is right and what is wrong. They could end up in huge trouble without realising.

 Inappropriate: Children might learn foul language and watch videos that they aren’t supposed at their age.

 Isolation: One can suffer from isolation as he/she will tend to be glued to their phones and not move out of their place to talk to people. Normal socializing that is interacting with pupils is also essential. If this becomes a habit, a face-to-face conversation will feel awkward for students.

 Addiction: Children in this generation have become so attached to their phones that they start sneaking their phones into classes and they will secretly chat without the teacher noticing. This is a very bad habit as the students will not learn anything in the lessons.

 Less sleep: Children will become so addicted that they will watch videos or chat with their friends all night under their bedsheets. This is very bad for young children and can cause health issues like heart disease and stroke.

 Abnormal symptoms: Depression, excessive aggression, abnormal anxiety or even normal anxiety is common with growing children, especially with tweens who use cell phones. Those suffering from social anxiety tend to immerse themselves in front of Facebook and other social media on smartphones. If socially, they feel inferior they tend to avoid social interactions.

 Bad for the eyes: Too much exposure to cell phones is bad for the eyes. Children must go out and spend time in outdoor activities and relish the fresh air, rather than remain glued to their phones. If they want they can go and play football or cricket outside.

 Communication with strangers: When surfing the internet or chatting online on smartphones, it is possible that one might end up building up relationships with strangers, who can turn out to be criminals as well. Children are vulnerable and are easily susceptible to outside influences.

 Cyber-bullying: In messaging apps on smartphones it is very easy for cyber bullies to thrive. They can harass and/or gang up on one person even easier than they could in a school environment. There aren’t moderators that go around monitoring what people say to each other. Anything can be said.

 Lacks emotional connection: There is lack of emotional connectivity since one does not meet the other person. Feelings when shared in person have more impact than calling or texting. The feelings of care and warmth are there when the communication is face to face. There is a decrease in face-to face communication. Face-to- face communication helps better messaging.

 Lack of body language communication: Body language conveys a lot. When chatting with friends online there is no body language communication as one does not interact with another person.

 Promotes laziness: Gluing your eyes to a smartphone can lead to laziness. It is a sheer waste of time for children as they could use that amount of time for completing their homework and submitting them on time. When using smartphones children should keep in mind the time limit and other works and responsibilities which hold more importance to their life than using their phones.

 Insecurity: Social Media is a cause for insecurities due to the fact that it makes people compare themselves to others. How can you not when all you see is pictures of your friends and acquaintances on your newsfeed?

 Causes distractions: Smartphones do distract one’s mind from many other activities. One can be involved in constructive activities that keeps one’s mind healthy. Merely spending hours on Facebook or WhatsApp and conversing via it is not healthy. Statistics show that the exam grades of students have fallen over the recent years because of Facebook. Students don’t concentrate on their homework and instead spend their time tapping different buttons on their phone keyboard or watching YouTube all the time.
