I partially agree. Why is it that is seems as if most of the parents who do homeschooling are idiots? Many of them religious fanatics. Of course, that is a redundant statement. LOL. I don't know if I would go so far as to make home schooling totally illegal, but I would like to see some sort of requirement for parents wishing to do this. Something along the lines of a competency exam. Or an SAT test? Side: Yes it should.

Parents who want to homeschool should at least have to prove that they are competent to do so, not merely motivated by desires for religious or anti-government indoctrination. It is completely illegal in Germany; you may recall a few years ago a fundamentalist family tried to claim asylum in America because they wanted to homeschool their child for religious reasons. 1) Outside the USA drinking while pregnant is quite common and there is no epidemic of birth defects in those nations from doing it. http://www.medicaldaily.com/ 2) In a large swath of the world even children drinking alcohol is less restricted or has a younger drinking age then we do. http://drinkingage.procon.org/ 3) If indeed serious damage was discovered after birth and it could be linked conclusively to alcohol then I'd have no problem with prosecuting that parent for causing it. But that's completely different from saying if you take a sip while pregnant they can fine, arrest, or imprison you. That's just crazy. Side: No it shouldn't.
Yeah....those are all pretty good point you make. And if you'll allow me to add another in defense of moderate alcohol use..... In those countries, like Italy and France, where it is common practice to allow children to partake of wine...or at least a bit of watered down vino..their overall alcoholism rate is significantly lower than ours here in the USA. Side: No it shouldn't.
The problem here is, any punishment you set for such a "crime", i.e. fining the mother or putting her in jail, would hurt the child's interests. So, it does seem to make sense to treat this as a crime. However, I think that in child custody cases, it should be an argument in favor of the father's side. Side: No it shouldn't.
No it should not. And for two primary reasons......... Such a law would be nearly impossible to enforce. Only pregnant women brazenly drinking in public places would be susceptible to being caught. What about the majority of them who would drink at home? Or in another private dwelling, like a friend's house? We have never proven that light and occasional usage of a low alcohol content beverage such as wine is detrimental to fetal development or overall physiological health. Thanks. Side: No it shouldn't.
