Should mixed age relationships be illegal?
Right now it is illegal for someone under 18 to date someone over 18.
It is illegal for a 16 year old to date a 20 year old which is 4 years apart. But it is perfectly legal for a 20 year old to date a 60 year old which is 40 years apart.
I think that is stupid. I am 16 & there's 20 year old girls I would date if I had the chance.
What could she do to me that any other girl couldn't do to me?

My most recent boyfriend turned 21 right before we broke up. Was our relationship in any way wrong or dirty or creepy? Not at all, particularly since I seem to be mature for my age and he is absolutely immature for his age. I feel that the age of consent should be lowered to 16. Side: No they should be allowed
I think that if you're under twenty-one, you should be able to date those sixteen and up; if you're between fourteen and sixteen, it should be no more than a four-year difference- the difference in high school student, say? And I guess if you're twelve or thirteen a two year difference is enough. If they're younger than half your age plus seven is usually a good reference. Side: No they should be allowed

I really wouldn't care who you dated. And we could make it go like this: Twelve years can date two years up Thirteen years could date three years up Fourteen years could date four years up Fifteen years could date five years up Sixteen years can date six years up Seventeen years can date seven years up Simple, and a very stupid system. Theoretically there's not much a twenty year old would have in common with a 16 year old. I don't say you should have them arrested but in many states, if they're having sex, it's tantamount to stautory rape. Not a good situation at all. Why, when you're breaking the chains of being a teenager yourself would anyone ever wish to go out with a 16 year old? Side: No they should be allowed

I am 17 and my girlfriend is 21. We started dating when I was 16, she was 20. I didn't want to date her for sex or give my virginity to her and she said that we wouldn't be able to have sex because she didn't want to take my virginity from me. Then we fell in love. We agreed to break up many times but could never do it. And eventually neither of us cared about what we originally said about my virginity, we just wanted to be with each other. We had sex. I'm glad the legal age of consent is 16 where I live because otherwise we could have never been together to begin with. Restriction on the dating age could prevent potential couples from being as happy as we are. "No they should be allowed." Side: No they should be allowed

New update on my relationship with the now 21 year old. Turns out that psycho was really controlling and made my life suck after a while. She turned out to be a terrible person and stalked me after I dumped her. She even made up a lie about being pregnant. She was conceited. And according to her our relationship failed because I wasn't mature enough. It didn't matter that she cheated on me, broke up with me multiple times over the smallest things(to see how far she could push me), and frequently let me know about how much she didn't care about anything I did("high school stuff doesn't matter because I'm in college and you're stupid for thinking it does"). I've come to the conclusion that she was mentally unstable. I'll say that this is probably the case for the majority of 20 year olds seeking a serious relationship with a 16 year old. Side: Adult is taking advantage

they should be able to date because evey body should be able to date. at least with anbody they wont pluss they should date so they could be ready for the world and so they could no that they win some and they lose some and so they could no what true love is and so they could no that if that person is the one for you and who is not, so kids should be able to date Side: No love is love

Any question of this type is just a show of Fear based ignorance and really serves no purpose in an intellectual society, except to let us know who need psychological help. Age is nothing once you are passed the age of consent. Love is the greatest thing humans can give each other and it should be given freely and often. Side: No love is love

Everybody has had that one person that you have wanted but never gave it a try because you thought the age difference would get in the way well now people are going after what they want no matter what the age difference is. Some famous couples have age differences you don't see anybody giving a care about them now do you? and if you make it illegal how does it make a difference there are still going to be couples of different ages even its a 14 & 18 year old or 20 &40;year olds, you find love in anybody of age, race, shape, or size...let people be happy with who their with.. Between a 16-year-old boy/girl and a 20-year-old young man/woman? Definitely. Why not? They're still young and while their interests may be somewhat different, it isn't wrong and shouldn't be a punishable offense. Although I have to wonder if such a relationship could withstand the criticism, trials and differences in maturity as it progresses. My first (and last) boyfriend and I started dating in high school when I was 14 and he was 18. Needless to say, it didn't last long, since my parents wouldn't approve, so we ended it on good terms. Later, though, when I turned 18 and right before he was 22, we ended up getting back together and lived together for three years. This second (and last) time it ended, it wasn't pretty. We tried to maintain a friendship but we eventually ended up hating each other's guts. My point is, there's nothing wrong with these relationships but it's likely they may not be successful in the long run. Side: No love is love

I'm a 16 year old girl and I'm in love with this amazing guy. But he is 21 and my mom thinks its illegal. Which is not true. Sex is illegal for minors and older people. Not a relationship. A relationship is not sex. Marriage is. I honestly don't care about age and big deal if they r both happy then they should be allowed. Side: No love is love

Hey if it should be illegal for a 16 year old guy to date a 20 year old girl then why dont we make it illegal for a 20 year old to date a 40 year old? At least that would be fair. There's lots of terrible evil stuff a 40 year old can do to a 20 year old. Side: No they should be allowed

It is illegal because a minor can't really consent to a sexual relationship with an older, more experienced person who is able to manipulate them, and who DOES know what s/he's doing. Basically, theoretically, a minor doesn't know all of the ins and outs of sex and sexual relationships and isn't mentally mature enough to make decisions about that. I'm not saying that sex between minors should be illegal, just that an adult who is dating a minor is taking advantage of the minor's youth, at least in a lot of cases. There are exceptions; there probably are some 16 year olds who are just as or more mature than their 20 year old partner, but those exceptions are probably kind of rare. Overall, I think that it should remain illegal for a minor to date an adult. Side: Adult is taking advantage

Well, if you're a 16 year old male, I truly believe you should be allowed to date a 20 year old woman. I think there should be two separate rules, because I may be wrong, but I'm guessing you are not in too much danger of being abused by a woman at this point regardless of her age. Sexist? Absolutely, but prove me wrong. Equal doesn't = same and all that. I think there's something scandelous about a 20 year old dude dating a 16 year old girl though. That should be illegal I think. So that's a completely non-PC stance I'm taking here, I expect someone to give me a good arguement why I"m wrong. Side: Yes arrest them!
Really a male cant be abused by a women?
Men are abused by women everyday. Most of the abuse goes unreported because men are more likely not to report it. In Straus and Gelles' second study, in 1986, 1.8 million women suffered assaults from a husband or boyfriend, but two million men were assaulted by a wife or girlfriend. The numbers are growing. Women are more likely to use a weapon then men. If husband / partners are taking this abuse why wouldnt a 16 year old boy who is "dating" a 20 year old women? I think what you are trying to say, on a non-PC stance, is its more socially acceptable for a younger man to date an older women then an older man to date a younger women. Young women who date older men are usually categorized as "gold diggers" because most people dont understand why someone so young would date such an older man. But when it comes to an younger man dating a older women he is seen as macho, cool and manly, right? So even as adults their are questions regarding major age differences in relationships. On a sexual abuse level men can be forced to have sex. Im sure you dont want me to go into detail. Its not a conversation I want to have with a someone elses child. Side: Yes arrest them!
Well, I don't think I said can't I just think consenual sex between a 16 year old male and an older woman is a completely different situation than when the sexes are reversed. I think male age of consent should be around 15 or 16. Key word being consent But the law agrees with you, and I'm not a psychologist by any means, But I know 0 guys that could possibly really be physically raped by a any girl. I mean, at the end of the day, a guy can "get away" as long as no guns or drugging drinks is involved. This is 99.9% of the time not the case when the roles are reversed. It's really really really hard for me to give any credence to a man who claims to be physically abused by a girl... I mean, hit the gym dude. Unless like I said some kind of weapons or drugging is involved, but that's not really the situation I'm addressing. Now mental abuse may be different, still though, I'm pretty firmly against the woosification of the male species, Side: No they should be allowed
Well, 20 might be cutting it close, I mean they could have been in highschool at the same time, maybe they started dating then or something. I don't think it's like evil or anything, just a little odd maybe... when the guy is the older one. I do think there needs to be some cuttoff though, and that is about the right range I think, maybe like a 4 year limit until they reach 18 or something. Now when a female is the older one; I realize maybe some guys could have the mental issues that woman have at that age as far as sex goes... least that's what the law seems to believe, personally though, I would have loved to have sex with a hot teacher when I was in highschool, or hot nurse, maid, etc basically any grown woman in a uniform :) And I know that the only mental issue I would have is maybe an overabundance of self-confidence. I don't know, I have a double standard, but being male my whole life, and having almost all male friends, it just looks like two very different things to me. I literally don't know any guy (who has not been completely whipped by a woman in their life and whose balls are not being stored in her purse) who doesn't hear one of these stories about some teenage boy getting it on with a teacher or something, and doesn't say "lucky bastard." maybe I'm weird. As a 21 year old (and older) you are an adult. You pay your own bills. You have LIVED longer and have experienced life emotionally longer without your parents guidance and rules. And anyone under 18, I don't want to hear how you are mature for your age. How would you know that? You haven't lived as an adult. You don't have the life experience to make that statement. Any one 21 and older wanting to date a 16 year old needs their intentions examined. A 21+ year old does not have ANYTHING in common with a sixteen year old. I look at a 16 year old and see a child, Not someone I want to have sex with. Even as a 19 and 20 year old you are still learning how the world really is. Many teens who believe and/or treated as mature for their age end up pregnant or being a teenage father. Side: Yes arrest them!

Yes they should. You are not as mature underage. These age limits exist for a reason. Don't you remember the older kids in elementary convincing the younger kids to do things they shouldn't? Same basic principle. The 20 year old male/female can convince the 16 year old female/male to do things they are not mature enough to be doing and/or would not choose to do otherwise. It honestly depends. The materity level of both involved is a major factor. I am 17 years old, i turned 17 in feb. My boyfriend is 22 and will be 23 in august. we have been together since april 5th 2009... almost 14 months. It has worked out between us. I am more mature for my age and he is about on the same mind level. I am not into partying and drama. I wanna graduate, than get married. After my wedding and honeymoon i will start attending tech for nursing, soon after i want to have 2 beautiful kids. I plan to have a career, husband and kids by the time i'm 21. This may sound strage but thats just where my heart and mind is. Side: Yes kill those cradle robbers!
