Generally speaking, incarcerating non-human animals (particularly for human amusement) is unconscionable to me. For the same kinds of reasons that keeping human animals in people zoos would be.

Firstly, in the wild there are many threats towards animals in certain areas and of particular species some of these threats include, poaching, habitat loss and climate change. Many of these threats accrue because of human and natural factors.

Most zoos were designed and constructed in a time when the animal's comfort was less important than the enjoyment of the public. Since then, many zoos have undergone extensive renovations and updated their exhibits to better mimic the animal's habitat, and others (mine included) are raising the funding to do so. They are moving in the right direction, at least.

One the positive side, zoos have been essential in the efforts to conserve countless species. The population of the Arabian Oryx, for example, once dwindled down to only nine animals in the whole world. These animals were given to the Phoenix Zoo for breeding, and now, more than 1000 have been reintroduced into the wild. The Phoenix Zoo and others also either have conservation centers on site or donate a portion of proceeds to conservation efforts. The best zoos can keep their animals happy and healthy as well as give the public an opportunity to view animals in an exhibit as close to their natural habitat as possible, and hopefully inspire the public to care about that species. Public opinion is incredibly important to conservation.

Unfortunately, they are not perfect. The worst zoos, those with outdated and unsuitable exhibits and substandard animal care practices, should certainly be closed or at least overhauled. Even the best zoos struggle with boredom and obesity in some of their animals. I think, especially with the current trend in animal activism, that even these problems can be fixed

Firstly, in the wild, there are many threats towards animals in certain areas and of particular species, some of these threats include, poaching, habitat loss and climate change. During 2014, the Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) reported 23 verified deaths of tigers due to poaching, but 58 due to other, sometimes unknown, causes. They also reported the deaths of 17 leopards due to poaching, however, 30 more died that year due to other causes. The most recent data from 2013 shows that 38 elephants and 41 rhinoceros were poached that year. These statistics are very worrying and without zoos, many of these animals would probably be extinct.

Secondly, many zoos have breeding programs for endangered animals. Tooronga Zoo along with many other zoos in Australia have a number of breeding programs for endangered animals, some of these animals include the Tasmanian Devil, the Corroboree Frog, the Little Penguin, the Mallee fowl, the Regent Honeyeater, the Long-nosed Bandicoot and the Brush-Tailed Rock Wallaby. These are just to name a few, so zoos most certainly have a large impact on saving species from extinction in the wild through their breeding programs.

Finally, zoos are highly regulated to meet animal welfare standards. Most zoos provide animals with an enriched habitat in which the animals are never bored and have plenty of space. For example, Melbourne zoo at the butterfly enclosure they make it humid because the Butterflies are from Queensland where it is humid. Many zoos have many factors in which they match to the animals’ habitat and that keep them occupied.

In conclusion, the number of threats in the wild that animals would have to face does not affect animals that are kept in zoos. Many zoos have breeding programs and enriched environments for the animals in the zoos right across the world.

No because these animals are unhappy in the zoo or you can gives these animals a large habitat.
