Should people be called the color of their skin?

People in my school are openly called white, black, etc. Well my opinion is if you are going to call people a race, call them it correctly. I.E. Caucasian, African American, etc. I also hate on sureys when the ask are you "white" african american, Pacific islander, other. I have honestly never met someone who blends in with paper....

no, calling people black, white, or gray is divisive and pushes us apart, rather than bring us together. if i was running the show, i would outlaw it altogether.

Yeah why not? Not to a definitive... but in a casual, informal way yes.

There's a huge difference in brown and yellow... and even white and black cultures that to narrow them down like that is actually just ignorant.

These are the major differences -

Black - British and American to Carribean to African people...

White - British and American to European (and all their differences)

Brown - Indian and Pakistani to Arabian and Native American/Autralians.

Yellow - Chinese and Japanese to Korean

There's also mixes which makes it harder to define

i.e. Southeast Asians and South Americans...

:D

Well obviously you can describe people in a much better way than the color of their skin... so whats the point of that. theyre still people either way. why do you need to classify people at all. just call them by where theyre from if you need to. And white is a color of paper not person.

Right but the color of their skin is a part of their physical description is it not? Besides, who said they were any different based on their color? I do not think this is about racism.

Right but why does it matter so much??

I regard myself as brown as well as indian as well as asian.

White not the colour of paper. The colour of paper is white.

Should we also leave out hair color, eye color, height and weight? When describing someone, If I were to say, you know the tall white girl with long blond hair and green eyes, would that be racist, should I really have to say the "Caucasian" girl, or "Anglo Saxon" girl. As a matter of fact did you know Caucasian is a term used for a person with pale or white skin. These people first came from Europe. Caucasian was first a geographical term. It referring to the Caucasus region (Caucasia) of central Eurasia. I, for one have never been to Caucasus. Anglo-Saxons is the term usually used to describe the invading Germanic tribes in the south and east of Great Britain from the early 5th century AD, and their creation of the English nation, to the Norman conquest of 1066. The Benedictine monk, Bede, identified them as the descendants of three Germanic tribes. I, have also never been identified as being from any Germanic tribe. I have pale skin "white girl" but am from Native American descent. I do not get offended when someone is describing me as "white". If the term white, black, or whatever offends you, you need to try to get thicker skin. You are American above all else, so when I describe you, if you happen to be "African American" I will probably say, you know the tall black girl from the accounting department. Get over it already.

Whats wrong with mentioning the color of someones skin if its not in a racial context? If I am describing someone to my friend for example, why is it wrong to say they are white, brown, black etc? People need to get over this whole PC bull!

NO the color of someone's skin is NOT their race. It's a color!! I am brown. For a race I could be Indian, Pakistani, Arabic, Lebanese the list goes on. Two different things.

But when is calling someone a certain color, NOT being in a racial context, at all? Not every time is racist, but 90% of the time, it is.

Side: No

Describing someone including their color is not racist in itself and NO 90% of the time it is not racist. I call myself brown all the time as do other people.

Side: yes

I think it's perfectly acceptable.

I'm not offended when I'm called white, and my friends are not offended when they're called black. It's what they are, and as long as it's not used in a derrogatory or degrading manner, it's fine.

You ARE white. Stop living in denial.

If you REALLY want to get politically correct...

Explain to me how you're caucasian if you're from America. Caucus is in Europe.
