Should people be fined for not voting?

Voter apathy is arguably an issue. Only 58% of eligible people voted in the 2016 US Election and around 65% voted in the 2017 French Election.

Spoiling one's ballot would not get you fined, but failing to turn up at a polling station / sending in a postal vote would.

This system is already in place in Australia, which saw a 93% turnout last election.

Is voting a privilege (one which is revoked for some criminals) or is it a social responsibility? Should you be fined if you don't vote?

Hello c:

IF voting became a RIGHT, and REFUSING jury duty became a JAILABLE offense, I'd support a penalty for not voting..

If people consider that all the candidates standing for election are unworthy of of their vote and their policies are incompatible with their own views then they should be allowed to exercise their ''freedom of choice/expression''.

Why should the electorate be forced to vote for politicians for whom they have no respect and/or for policies which are in direct conflict to their own beliefs and aspirations for the country.

Not voting is freedom of speech. Silence is freedom of speech. You also have the right to remain silent.(giggle)

As per legal rights and other laws it is not mandatory. Moreover if people are deeply unhappy with the candidates and don't want to vote they shouldn't.

Side: No, they shouldn't be fined

No voting is self-incriminating so a person who cannot find a common defense may not want to vote for some people that others are willing to vote for on a ballot. All though I would suggest voting off ballot it can be documented as filing a grievance.

That's not all too different from the "Vote or Die" joke on South Park.

On one hand there are very informed people who don't vote because there's never a good choice. However on the other hand I've found in my anecdotal experience it's generally the least politically informed people who don't vote. I'm very glad these people have self-excluded from the political process and forcing them to vote is counterproductive to the goal of producing a functioning benevolent society. We need more informed voters, not more uninformed voters.
