As long as everyone else is, then yeah. What would they do if they were being shot at? Run away and call for help? That's what a civilian does.

Side: Yes

OK, let's say that civilians can't have them, and bad guys only have them if they can get them illegally. Then should cops have them?

As long as guns are still being made and sold (legally or illegally)...

Why are you telling me? That's what I'm saying.

Side: Yes

What are they going to say to the cimminal? "Stop! Or I'll say 'Stop' again"

Side: Yes

Every domestic a police officer is called to has the potential for extreme violence. Even in countries where gun laws are extremely strict (e.g. Australia) there is still the potential for a cop to be unlucky enough to be faced with a firearm when he knocks on someone's door. Police need the ability to face lethal force with lethal force. Taking a stick to a gun fight is a surefire way to end up lying on the floor in a bloody mess. Give the cops guns. Tightly regulate their usage, but make sure they've got them.

Side: Yes

Well duh. How are they going to shoot people if they don't have their guns?

Slingshots?

Side: Yes

I think this is kind of common sense, Officer's have an obligation to the law, and are pretty much on call to risk their lives at anytime. (well maybe not anytime, anytime for police in general but not for one officer) Of course they should be allowed to carry guns.

I take it to mean a police officer walking " the beat" as in your day to day on the ground officer well if so no they should not .

The UK, for example, has gun squads. They're highly trained in using firearms with years of prior experience before being given a gun.

It has happened before in the republic of Ireland and then the armed police ( higher ranking )are called out , but your ordinary policeman is unarmed , it's rare criminals shoot at unarmed cops.Even during the height of the troubles the police down south remained unarmed.
