Should schools have uniforms?

What do YOU think? Should schools have uniforms? Do uniforms serve a purpose?

Yes, they should.

I'm for this actually, as pro-creativity as I am.

I think that uniforms tear down some of the social stratification which can exist in public schools based on the income of the parent. I think that most reasonable humans agree that at least in childhood one should not be judged by the income of the parent.

I don't think the self-expression argument (on the other side) holds water. Is the act of dressing a certain way truly a form of self-expression? I find that notion very shallow.

Dressing oneself is easy. It says nothing but that you put those clothes on that day. Maybe if you want to express yourself a certain way and are not able to do so without hiding behind a costume, that is not really you after all.

Side: Yes, they should.

Is the act of dressing a certain way truly a form of self-expression?

For the individuals who wear clothes representing things like their religious or political affiliations it most certainly is. We are walking billboards, the brand and style of clothes we wear all put on exhibit their make and creator. Might as well allow the personal tastes or views of the individual be shown as well.

I agree with this utterly.

However, we are not precisely billboards are we?

I mean, a billboard says what it says. If it has a giant cross on it it is a religious billboard.

You can put a cross on a person, that does not make them christian. You could put a giant cross on me, I could carry one around if I want. I could bleed from my palms and feet, and I'd still not be a christian.

Really, what is it for when we dress a certain way?

I'm as much a fashion victim as anyone, most likely. I'm not preaching here.

This is a new area of thought for me, and I find myself genuinely interested,

my initial thought is, I feel that any "promotion" through dress is not of what appears to be promoted, but of oneself by-and-large. This is even more true for kids. What does a kid really know about whatever they are wearing beyond what they've been told by friends or parents to think?

The person wearing a cross does not want to promote Jesus, they want to promote that they really like Jesus.

The person wearing a "save the whales" shirt doesn't want to promote save the whales (well I'm sure they do but mainly) they want to promote that they support "saving the whales.

Saying someone cannot wear something within the confines of a school I don't think is doing much in the way of curbing their individuality. I think perhaps it may be forcing them to exhibit their individuality in a less superficial way... maybe.

Like I said, I'm kind of developing this theory as I go. I've never put much thought into it.

I hear some people say it stops them from being creative if they wear uniforms. Is that really true? True self expression lies in what you do, not how you look. Teenagers can be alienated into social generalization such as geek, nerds, goth, bimbos or what ever similiar nonsense from what they wear. That means friendship goes through a form of elimination based on what you are with how you look. Uniform arguably but not certainly keeps you on the right track. You are here to study. What ever business you have with your personal lives shall be dealt outside the school. After all, it is only a few hours..

uniforms make everybody look similar. there is no way a rich kid could show off his/her new clothes everyday, and pick or a less rich kid.

yes i agree with mitgag,

thank you :)

there wont be any discrimination based on rich and poor..

which is totally acceptable. there would also be no picking out of rich friends and teasing poor ones.

also when students realise they are looked down on because of their financial status, they grow under-confident.

Schools should have uniform because wearing uniform makes children accustom to the formal style from childhood. Consequently, they will not have any problems with dresscode on future workplace.

Another reason to be for school uniform is that pupils do not waste time on thinking about what to dress up today or tomorrow. So, they have more time for studying.

I support saying that we should have school uniforms because in my school some of the girls show way too much junk! ^.^

Side: Yes, they should.

The reason being that a student will know exactly what to wear each day.

No. A lot of students use their clothes to express themselves, and if they use uniforms, they have no way to express themselves. Adding uniforms is stopping creativity and imagination, and also their ability to think for themselves. A lot of jobs nowadays don't have uniform, unless you count the low-paid jobs. Even if you have to wear a suit, there are tons of different colors, prints, fabrics, and styles to choose from.

Clothing is a way to express yourself.

If you make everyone wear the same, you take away their creativity - that is not good.

Some a poor, some ar not - but when it comes to clothing it doesn't really matter what it costs. Its about how you feel comfortable, it's about expressing yourself, it is kind of .. art if you think about it.

Maybe in the 'fashion world' it is about price - but in the real world, the real thing is just being creative.

You can easily wear a cool outfit, by using creativity instead of money.

I have never seen a uniform big enough to fit a school..., but even if they made one that big, it would get in the way of students trying to go in and out of the school. It's just not practical ;)

I was actually serious about the uniform argument. Please post serious replies.

Joe's right. You should be ashamed of yourself. The Brits are supposed to speak proper English. You are a disgrace to England and should not use the flag to associate yourself with the rest of us. Are you a chav?

I don't even think school should be mandatory, let alone forcing their students to wear uniforms. Let's get right down to the purpose of a school uniform. A uniform is there to strip away your sense of individuality, in order to encourage conformity. Anything that attempts to stop free thinking is immoral.

Glad someone on this side finally got to the bottom line. It's not exactly an issue of self-expression, but of individualism. School uniforms are used to suppress the latter. Seeing as I am an individualist through and through, I could never support school uniforms.
