Should the Confederate flag be banned?

We all have seen the Confederate flag on the back of trucks and tatooed on peoples arms and on hats

Should people be able to wear those things? I mean we all flip out when people advertise the KKK but we allow the Confederate's to show their pride. The Confederate's supported slavery while the North didn't. Should they be able to advertise the C Flag?

I think that the Confederate flag should be banned. It makes me sick to see these people advocating that flag when all that they are truly advocating is racism, and slavery.

Side: yes

I believe the Confederate Flag is a part of the nations history and should be treated as such...just a flag from the many in our history.

I do believe that particular flag should not be flown on any government buildings and I think it no longer is. Whatever a person does privately is their business, albeit in very bad taste. The Confederate Flag no longer represents anything with regard to our country. If one wishes to show their pride as a Southerner then I believe it can be accomplished in another way and it may even involve a flag, but not that one.

I think a great way to settle it is for the Southern States who were a part of the confederacy to design a new flag only to denote their southern roots. You can even make it a contest between those states and have it judged by the Governors of each state involved. The "NEW" Southern Flag must not have anything to do with the KKK or Slavery and the proceeds of all sales for merchandise bearing that emblem could be given to southern poor after expenses.

I see no pride in the Confederate Flag and it should no longer be flown at any time. Of course we all realize than banning this flag does not and will not change the hearts of men and women who still believe in the old Southern ways...but it shall not rise again and neither should the flag.

Side: It should only be seen as history

I agree on all points. I think that the contest might actually be a good idea. What pride is there in the Confederate flag? Pride of showing how the southerners were for slavery, that I find to be wrong and disturbing.

It represents a bad part of America, it is a representative of slavery and racism. Something that nobody should show a liking to.

Side: yes

well does it really matter, who really cares. racists will be racists. There's nothing you can do to change it. Its really just an object, maybe i want to wear a big African flag around I wouldn't see anything wrong.

Side: Yes

not only is it the BATTLE flag of traitors, but it has since come to SYMBOLIZE white supremacy and racial hatred.

it has no place on display in any public place where government dollars are at work.

you want to put it up over your fireplace to show ppl when they come to dinner, fine.... that way they can know where you are coming from and walk out, if they have any sense.

Side: Yes

It is now 2015 and the recent Charleston Church massacre has produced a movement to take down the Confederate flag from all public displays.

Side: Yes
5 points

No.

Unfortunately neither should the nazi flag, the ku klux klan, the black panthers, or scientologists (joking... kind of)

Now, there is no doubt in my mind, that all the "it symbolizes southern pride, not racism" is complete bs. I know, they know, we all should know any a-hole who proudly displays that flag is a complete a-hole.

But, part of being a free country, we have to put up with a few idiots, and hope they all go extinct eventually. In a peaceful way though.

So you personally do not believe it should be banned? You think that people that advocate racism are entitled to because of the country they live in? I think it should be the opposite I do not think we have the right to be racists towards any race.

Whooooooa, you can't put the Black Panthers in with those three. Do a little research. They're no angels, but they were major victims of successful propaganda efforts.

... I can't put Black Panthers in with Scientologists? or with Nazi's?

I should have added to the list that one cannot ban Christians, Muslims, Crucifixes, Pentagrams, the Flying Speghetti Monster, Jews, Furries, Gays, Transvestites, Midgets, Blondes, Brunnettes, Red Heads, Masons,

You cannot ban someone from keeping a crucifix in a jar of piss, or from people putting up a Christmas tree, or hiding easter eggs, or going to confession,

you cannot ban people from knocking on your door because they want to tell you about Mormons or Jehova Witnesses.

The point was provocation, not necessarily evil.

But you're right, Black Panthers should not be thrown in with the KKK or Nazi's.

Of course not. Everyone is entitled to wear whatever the hell they want. I see black people wearing clothes that favor black people and I have seen shirts that show white people being trash, if other races can make fun of other races through their clothes why should white people be persecuted for showin' their pride?

Do you have any idea what the Confederate flag represents and what it is known for?

Side: It should only be seen as history

I thought it represented the South in the Civil War. I do not agree with the South's positions back then in any way slavery is horrible and so is racism. But people should be entitled to WEAR whatever they want to wear.

Look. I know that this sounds completely and totally selfish, but my reason for not banning the flag is as such:

I see swastikas all the time at my school and I see crosses proudly displayed next to them. I see black people with swastikas even! The ignorance has gotten around that the swastika means you hate only people of the Jewish faith! Can you believe this?! But my point is that my school discourages students from displaying this stuff but they don't ban it completely. No one makes a big deal about it because there are so many Christians, and like I said about the ignorance level of people at my school there is really no one to make a fuss to who won't shut you out. But if anyone wore a Confederate flag to school it's a hate crime instantly! This is bull shit! Either ban everything or nothing!

But quite frankly I'm for banning nothing because I'm all for showing pride towards what you believe, whether or not people agree with you for believing that or not. So if we ban everything that means the only thing you can show pride to is your country by displaying a Union flag which kind of defeats the purpose of America being a multicultural and ethnic country if we can't display our pride to our ethnic and cultural heritage.

Be mindful.

Any argument that would affirm the abolition of the Southern Flag can and will be used against every flag that is flown.

The current flag of the Unites States also represents segregation and discrimination of the past and present, respectively. The U.S. in its current or past forms is not above reproach.

(A friendly reminder of the knowledge that the U.S., post civil war, has done that which is also hateful.)

Wherein we condemn others we may condemn ourselves.

I support neither view, for by doing so I incriminate myself and others.

Well there is the confederate battle flag, that is the one with the X. The other is the flag of the Confederate States of America, this is the one that should be banned. The other one is not as bad because it represents the confederate soldiers who were Americans.

Side: Which one

Technically, they have every right to show that flag. That doesn't mean I want them to, but they still have the right to do so. Banning it would be unconstitutional.

the confederacy is part of my history and i am glad of that

It does not represent slavery or racism

Side: No I'm showin me pride!

i agree that the confederate flag should not be flown on governmental buildings, but for reasons completely different.

the first thing that i think thats being missed is that the civil war wasnt fought over slavery, in fact after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation stated it "had no value except as a War measureā€ in an effort to weaken their supplies

had slavery not been there in the first place, the war still would have happened. if your that interested, read this essay:The 10 Causes Of The War Between The States

Essay by James King

it states 10 reasons that there was a civil war, only two of them had ANYTHING to do with slavery. the people arguing here argue the point of their biased education, which says that the north (the good guys) defeated the south (the bad guys) who wanted slavery to continue. if thats the case then why didnt the war end when the corwin amendment was suggested, which basically took away congress' right to end slavery. the civil war was not about slavery, and would have been fought regardless of it. so go ahead, fly it at your house, but on public building, especially the capitol buildings, its treason

No, it shouldn't be banned. Idiots have the right to be idiots, and if they want to wear their ignorance in plain view for all to see it only makes them easier to spot from a distance. While I dont think that the people wearing their "pride" hats and such are really trying to show a historical pride as much as their racist colors, I cannot in good conscience take their right away to be ignorant. I would love to see it gone along with the rest of the "oh its not what you think, look it up!" bullshit like the swastikas, but unfortunately if I want to be able voice my opinions, they need to be able to voice theirs.

We don't ban symbols or beliefs in this country. We don't stop people from wearing nazi signs or other racist symbols towards any group because it is consider a belief and we have freedom of expression in this country. Now if they decided to take it one step further and actually commit the racist acts that the symbol is associated with then it would be illegal. Symbols of belief and such though shouldn't banned.

Side: No I'm showin me pride!

No. Thats like saying should we be banned from being our ethnicity. That shows their pride and who are we to judge because they use it.

The Confederate flag represents the pride of racism and slavery, what you are saying is that we shouldn't judge people just because they are racist? I find racists sickening, it isn't judging ethnicity it is judging their views on other races.

Side: yes

It's retarded to say that the Confederate flag represents racism. i know so many rednecks who i know are not racists who wave the flag as a symbol of the Southern heritage.

Hell, it's a Southern battle flags. That's why many rednecks who enter the Army put that shit as a patch on their uniforms. Because they're southerners in battle.

And really, when studying the Civil War and all, it had little to do with slavery at all. The Southerners for the most part believed in Popular Soveriegnty. The North did not, they believed in a strong Federal government. This is what caused seperation in belief. and, of course, the North failing to comply with Federal law (fugitive slave act and such). The southerners saw that the yankees who were forcing them to live under Federalism were not even obeying those laws. So they rebelled, eventually.

Basically, the Libertarian Party believes in something very similar. They want to break down the Federal government so that States will have most say in what they enact.

Basically, History will help people in realizing how NOT RACIST the flag is. also, getting to know people who actually wave it (which is most rednecks apparently).

Under the argument that this flag is racist and therefore should be banned is absurd, under that logic most flags should be banned, for example it was under the flag of the United states which Jim crow laws were put in place and the flag of the United Kingdom where slaves were transported to the Americas. It is history and should therefore not be banned such as every other flag.

Side: No I'm showin me pride!

Of course not, it's a great form a mermorabilia to remind us all of the time when America wasn't civilised enough to sort out slavery in a debating room like we did in Britain.

Side: No I'm showin me pride!

Um I am not a confederate, though I believe that banning a flag is pathetic. It serves as a reminder of what happened.

Over here we got rid of slavery in parliament, rather than kicking up a fight over it.

Side: No I'm showin me pride!
1 point

First off, it should be "No, I'm showing my pride!" not "No I'm showin me pride!". Second, let me make it clear, I'm against the Confederate flags and I would never display such flags due to the connotations of racism and slavery associated with these flags, and I don't think a state government should be displaying Confederate flags due to the fact that the Confederacy doesn't exist anymore and governments shouldn't be displaying flags of nonexistent entities. However, with that being said, a ban is too broad in my opinion. I do believe that an individual should have the right to display the Confederate flags and any flag or symbol for that matter within their house or on their property if they so wish (even if I don't like it). I also have no problem with stores selling Confederate flags and I think that Confederate flags should continue to be allowed to be displayed in museum and plays. So, no, I do not support an overall ban of the Confederate flags.

Side: No I'm showin me pride!

No. The flag for me personally represents the want of State's rights, among other things. I understand the racial aspect, but I proudly bear the flag as a piece of my political beliefs and heritage.
