Should the US increase the minimum wage they paid to workers.

The debate is about whether or not a minimum wage should exist.

I don't exactly think a significant increase has to be made but the sides force me to either abolish the minimum wage or increase it which is a bit odd.

I like there to be a non-negotiable minimum wage below which no employer can legally hire a worker as this is one of many ways to stop monopolies from taking over (they could employ millions if they could pay them low enough) but also ensures that workers are not having to choose between unemployment benefits which pay more than the meager non-livable wages the jobs they can get offer them.

The only realistic argument against minimum wage is the people who also want to abolish welfare and benefits but these people are social darwinists and are frankly the psychopathic greed-driven maniacs we nee dou to fgovernment, not in control of it (and the countries where such people are in control have bouts of poverty).

The so called minimum wage is fine for service companies operating in the domestic market in which their competitors will be subject to the same legislation. However, such an imposition placed on corporations which are competing in the global economy against countries, such as India, China and Indonesia, where, in many cases the wages are just above the slave labour category, would find it yet another unfair and cumbersome disadvantage. When the wage bill rises without a corresponding increase in productivity the ''product'' cannot be produced competitively resulting in either the firm going bankrupt or moving it's operation to a country with lower labour costs. Both scenarios result in the indigenous workforce losing their jobs, the nation losing exports and increasing imports. This was highlighted when it was discovered that the United State's Olympic team's sports attire was manufactured by the American company, Ralph Lauren, ( Polo Sports) in China.

The fault is with the sweat shops, not with the ones paying decent wage. :)

I'm not sure if you understand the economics of business. In a domestic market, ( the home market) the minimum wage, corporation tax, ( tax on profit) and other national regulations such as mandatory health and safety requirements, industrial relations laws etc., everyone has the same governmental taxes and legal requirements to meet. This means that everyone is competing on an even playing pitch. In the global market place wages and industrial legislation varies greatly with many Asian countries paying the equivalent of £10 to £ 15 per week and imposing a significantly lower rate of corporation tax. This clearly makes such countries a much more attractive base for manufacturers to establish their factories. If the manufacturers in the U.S.A, or Europe are required by law to pay higher wages than their international competitors then their goods/products become noncompetitive, and as previously mentioned this inevitably leads either to the closure of the company or the concern transferring their operation to a different country with lower labour costs. The manufacturers based incountries which flood our markets with cheap goods do not necessarily operate ''sweat shops'', they just pay a fraction of the wages enjoyed in the west and their health and safety procedures are virtually non existent so this is another overheads reducing element. This is about as clearly and simple as I can explain my argument and if you fail to comprehend the ramifications of permitting government interference in business then you will get hungry, at which point you can eat your foreign car.
