Should the president ever be allowed to declare war?
The constitution is clear on this; only congress can declare war.
Yeah, lets have another Iraq!

How come I have to want another Iraq to vote on this side Joe? Iraq was retarded. Anyway, that's why the congress is in charge of the funding. Like a week president could say, "we're invading Canada!" and the congress can be like, "whatever dude, here's ten bucks for that mission." Unfotunately in the case of the Iraq war, dems were busy being scared little b!tches and placating to the atmosphere of fear so expertly created by our top notch corporate media, Of course a strong president like FDR would just be like "fine congress, don't fund it, but I'm sending a fleet to Japan anyway, so if you want them to have the gas to get back home eventually, you better fund this thing, or you can run for reelection under the banner "vote for me, I left half the Navy stranded in the Pacific" ... so maybe you're on to something. Side: yeah but not like Iraq

No I'm not, but while the Constitution says only Congress declares war, in practice that is not how it works. the Commander and Chief to my knowledge has decided when and where to go to war almost every time, then the Congress has an option of saying yes or no, which today translates funding the war or not funding the war. So the system has kind of mended the Constitution on its own. I'm not sure if that's good or bad though, if that is what you are asking. Side: Yeah, lets have another Iraq!

While the president should literally be allowed to "declare" war due to constitutional rights and freedoms, the president should never be allowed to begin a war based on his/her personal feelings towards a foreign country. Should the need for war arise, the call will be answered by a collection of political representatives of the general population. If just one person, in this case the president, personally feels the need to begin a war while all others do not share the same belief, that lone individual should not be allowed to go against the collective beliefs of the majority opposition as that individual is most likely wrong in his/her judgement. No, this BS about the president declaring war started with Korea. It's fairly recent in the history of this nation and it is something that should have been curtailed long ago. It's over due. The constitution clearly states that only congress can declare war, not the president. Side: Fuck no!

I have to clarify. The constitution says the president can request a declaration of war but it must go through congress to be legal. We haven;'t had that in a long time. COngress has approved money for war, or approved parts after the fact but I think the last legal declaration of war was Dec. 1941. Side: Fuck no!
