Assisted suicide (and suicide itself, for that matter), should be completely legal. All it comes down to is a matter of personal liberty, something this country is severely lacking at this point in history. The Declaration of Independence states that we have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." So, naturally, if we choose to give up our right to life, that should be our choice. The government coming in and saying we have to live is exactly like its foreign policy: the entire world has to have democracy. What the feds fail to realize is that life doesn't necessarily work for some people, just as democracy doesn't work for all parts of the world.

well i totally agree with joecalvary. i think that some people do need a little extra assistance.

also, i believe if helping suicide will make there passing a lot less painful and slow, then it could be a good thing. i know people who have committed suicide, it is not a pleasant thing.

this argument can go both ways really. if someone receives help then maybe they think that they really want that person to go but then again if they are really sick or something then it could help. which is euthanasia...

People should be able to commit suicide if they want to. It's unethical to force people to live in chronic pain.

Side: yes

I say yes to assisted suicide but we face two very tough decisions in affirming the act. The first lies in God's law and/or religious beliefs and the second in the Hippocratic Oath. I can add a third argument by asking if assisted suicide should be the answer in all cases? Incurable illness is one thing but psychological disorders are quite another matter in my view. In any case, I believe we should have the option if all parties are agreeable and all are in good conscience by doing so.

God's law and/or religious beliefs should not be a factor.

If we just worry about ourselves and not worry about what other people are doing then things should pan out. Let God be the judge. That's his job.

The question was "Should they legalize assisted suicide?" My answer was yes, with concerns. It is the legislators of this country that must decide the issue, however, the legislature is driven by its constituency and most physicians in this country must swear to the Hippocratic Oath in some form. Hence there will, most likely, be problems with legalization since a great majority of or legislators believe in God's law through one of several religions and doctors are sworn to use their knowledge and expertise to keep their patients alive! It is fair to say that both will be problematical in passing such laws.

If we believe that it is true, in the end God will be the sole judge of us all.

There are too many people on this world as it is, so if someone wants to sacrifice themself to make more room for the growing population but needs some help, I say go for it! It shouldn't be illegal to help your friend make room for the growing population, even if that isn't his/her motives. However, there should be some sort of note by the person committing suicide saying that "Hey, this guy is helping me end my life, he's innocent!" Or something along those lines with a signature by the deceased so that the authorities know it wasn't a homoside.

But if we do that then we can't take out the idiots on the freeway and claim that it was assisted suicide!

well that is certainly one drawback. [x

HELL NO!!!! A person to committ suicide is a coward. Life, no matter what is never that bad! And yes the constitution does guarentee a person life liberty and the persuit of happiness but that is just it. It guarentees the PERSUIT of happiness. that doesnt mean you will actually achieve happiness. And as far as you giving up there "right to life," that statement is technically not correct. Because really the right of life is never given up or taken away. you still would have had that right no matter what.

There are a lot of suicide bombers that would beg to differ ;)

If it was legalized.. there would need to be a VERY thick line drawn of what is assisted suicide and what is just plain old murder.

Side: kidding

Damn! And here I was hoping for that thin line...., oh well ;)

Draw Backs:

Some women could say that they were watching the news and their fetus was so depressed that he decided that he didn't want to be born any more (because the world is so upside down) so she got her doctor to help with a little assisted fetus suicide. But hey, this is already legal so lets focus on the benefits, shall we?

Benefits:

There are some people out there that should commit suicide but are in denial. They are in need of some assistance. Pedophiles are in this category as well as terrorist.

Actually, terrorist are not in denial, they just want to be able to chose the time and place. I say there's no time like the present so they need assistance now before they hurt someone other than themselves.

Now, there are a lot of educated people out there that:

1. Hate stupid people.

2. Don't believe in an afterlife.

3. Don't believe in God.

Since terrorist believe that:

1. God wants them to blow themselves up and that

2. they are going to get 72 virgins in the afterlife for doing it.

I think that it is relatively safe to say that:

1. Terrorist are stupid people and that

2. I should have little trouble in getting a lot of educated people to agree with me. But hey, I've been wrong before ;)

Yes. But with safeguards like they have in Oregon, so that people who are depressed get mental health help and there is no danger of abuse of people who are vulnerable. Washington state hopes to pass a similar law in November - http://www.itsmydecision.org

It should be up to the individual, not the government and not the church, to decide whether they have suffered enough and whether they want to have a safe and dignified way to die, with the opportunity to say goodbye to friends and family.

When life has been artificially extended by medical treatment, it's no longer about God deciding the "natural" time to die - it should be up to the person themselves.

Suicide that is sought due to mental anguish should be treated as a disorder and the person should be medicated. If the person is terminal and in chronic pain due to a physical ailment then why prolong their suffering.
