Should we ban or restrict the use of violent video games?

The debate about violent video games such as Mortal Kombat, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom has received a lot of attention since 1999 when two students of Columbine High School, Colorado, shot and killed 13 fellow pupils and finally themselves. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold enjoyed the bloody video game Doom and, according to many, were inspired by it. The debate over the destructive influence of video games even arrived at the US senate in 2000, when several researchers showed concern about the effect of violent video games on young people.
While we can learn much from existing research on other media types, research focusing on violent video games is very limited. Two studies by the psychologists Craig Anderson and Karen Dill, dealing with the effects of violent video games both in the laboratory and in real life are considered extremely important in the field.
Rating systems, adopted globally by the video game industry in 1994, established the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), a comprehensive labelling system that rates over 1,000 games per year and has now rated more than 8,000 games in total. Less than 1 per cent of all games released in the UK have been rated as suitable only for people 18 years or over.
Laws banning or restricting the sale of violent video games and enforcing rating upon them have been introduced by several US states (Washington, Indiana and St. Louis among them). An estimated 145 million Americans are video game users and $6.9 billion has been invested in sales in 2002. In Europe, Germany has also moved towards a ban on violent video games after 16 people were killed in an Erfurt School in 2002.

when children begin playing games saturated with violence, their imagination becomes filled with a wide variety of things that they might never have encountered.

they could easily become addicted to the dark thrills they get, and it is no stretch for them in any case to apply their ideas to real life

Of coarse we should. Take a look at our kids today, all you ever hear on the news is all about young kids bashing and threatening innocent people. Why ? Its bad enough these kids have been abused by another child or an adult either sexually, verbally, physically, visually and mentally. Now you want to manifest that violence from video games ? Its bad enough what we watch on television.

Then the parents of those children NEED to act like a parent for there kids! If parents or other adults think banning videos will help, well, then they are wrong! That would just make things worst! Parent should act upon their child instead of ruining the lives of other children who do play video games.

And if you don't agree with me then go watch this video!

Why ban violent video games? I say no because its not the video that tells you to go kill someone or do something stupid, its your own chose to do something stupid or do something violent not a video game! You people need to get that through your thick head, what makes us look more stupid is blaming games for violence, Dont forget that even when games weren't made there was still gangs and robbery's and murders and guess what? It was there decision to do those crimes not anyone else telling them to or forcing them to it was there chose! Also let me say something important here, even if you do ban violent games there still going to be murders, Robbery's, gangs so banning violent videos wont do anything to reduce violent crimes around the world it never will so stop blaming games for someones stupid decision in doing something violent. What you need to do is ask yourself how is violence caused and I 100% assure you that violent videos will be the last thing that will come up or will need to worry about!!! I am sorry but I cant stand when people think so stupid and blame something so small?!?!?

As long as the parents sit down with their children and explain to them that the violence they see in those games is wrong, then the games should be allowed.
