Should we ban the keeping of animals in zoos?

Animals belong in their natural habitat in the wild. It is a breach of their natural rights to take them by force into captivity for our own purposes.

Whatever the good intentions of zoo-keepers, animals in zoos suffer. They are inevitably confined in unnaturally small spaces, and are kept from the public by cages and bars. They suffer psychological distress, often displayed by abnormal or self-destructive behaviour. Aquatic animals do not have enough water, birds are prevented from flying away by having their wings clipped and being kept in aviaries.

Animals do not have rights. In any case, zoos exist to protect endangered species and to help us understand and protect our animal cousins more successfully. One of the reasons animals are taken into captivity in zoos is because they are under threat if they stay in their natural habitat.

Though there are bad zoos out there there are also good ones. It is of the utmost importance to turn bad zoos into good zoos.

Good zoos in which animals are well fed and well looked after in spacious surroundings are becoming the norm and should be encouraged. Zoos can exist without cruelty to animals, however, and so the fact that there are animal welfare problems with some zoos does not meant that all zoos should be shut down.

Who are you to say that animals do not have rights? They are creatures that feel pain, and are able to think to some extent.

Zoos main purposes are to be attractions, not as endangered species havens.

Zoos do not exist without cruelty to animals, they never have the amount of space that they had in the wild. How can you say that a Bush Garden's acre of lion territory is not cruel to the lion when it's natural habitat stretches for miles upon miles.

Adults and children visiting zoos will be given the subliminal message that it is OK to use animals for our own ends, however it impinges on their freedom or quality of life; thus zoos will encourage poor treatment of animals more generally. People do not go to zoos for educational reasons they simply go to be entertained and diverted by weird and wonderful creatures seen as objects of beauty or entertainment. As a form of education the zoo is deficient: the only way to understand an animal properly is to see it in its natural environment – the zoo gives a totally artificial and misleading view of the animal by isolating it from its ecosystem.

There are two problems with the claim that zoos are beneficial because they help to conserve endangered species. First, they do not have a very high success rate – many species are going extinct each week despite the good intentions of some zoos. This is partly because a very small captive community of a species is more prone to inter-breeding and birth defects. Secondly, captive breeding to try to stave off extinction need not take place in the context of a zoo, where the public come to look at captive animals and (often) see them perform tricks. Captive breeding programmes should be undertaken in large nature reserves, not within the confines of a zoo.

As above, research into animals (when it respects their rights and is not cruel or harmful) may be valuable, but it does not need to happen in the context of confinement and human entertainment. Also, the only way really to understand other species is to study them in their natural habitat and see how they interact socially and with other species of flora and fauna.

yes we should ban zoos because animals get treated so badly in them and get treated with no respect

yes they should be shut down because animals need the wild.for kids and adults who want to learn about them watch TVA or become an animal explorer go to Africa Australia.and how do you no if the trainers treat them nicely what if they abuse them to get them to listen to them.and every animal that was born or brought to our region get tested on by scientist and half the animals born or brought here die before they get in there environment because of testing.and they don't always give the animals everything they need take the elephant as an example they brake down trees to scratch them selves at zoos i don't see that i see them rolling on the ground itching them selves.and also people throw stuff at the animals and the animals eat the items and choke and they get sick and possibly die.and when scientist come to see the animals most recognized them and go crazy trying to attack them witch goes to stress .once there going crazy the TRAINERS tranquilized them and scientist do more test witch kills more animals.

I think zoo is a good place for animals to live since the zoo keepers take care of their

animals very nicely and give them food, water and medical treatments & medical check-ups.A zoo also helps us humans to learn a lot about animals. They also have a facility of seeing animals that we have never seen before.Zoo is also better than the wild because in the wild the animals hunt freely. But in the zoo the keepers help the animals that are becoming extinct.

some zoos practically kill the animals. I read about a zoo in Indonesia were an orangutang and her baby were living in a cage no bigger than a telephone box. It is inhumane to treat animals this way. It must stop.

Most humans have animals used as entertainment and not as living things that are like them. This is not very right for animals because they are living things that should be respected. Zoos are just a business. Humans capture animals and then say for example “ New Attraction” which will bring lots of customers. The zoos uses animals in a disrespecting way and abuse animal catching as a way to get money. Even if zoos are helping in any way if there was one zoos are just a business that wants money.

Animals also have live. they can live only in there natural habitat. They also have right to live freely and get enough food, water and air. Instead of keeping them in zoos we can keep them in national parks and sanctuaries where they live in there natural environment ,hunt themselves to get food, and depend on themselves for living.

i am completely for animal rights, so don't mistake me for one of THOSE people. Yet, zoos protect endangered animals, and save and help sick and injured animals. so, as someone completely for animal rights I say that as long as the zoos treat the animals correctly, then animals should be allowed to be kept in zoos.

Animals are kept in zoo's so that we can educate the general public about endagered animals and how to properly protect them. Even though animals that are in zoo's and can't be released into the wild, because we changed their natural survival methods. If they were to be released, they would not be able to survive, so we keep them in zoos. Insead of taking animals from the wild and domesticating them to live in zoos, they breed the animals in the zoos, thus making everything ok.

i think they should be shut down still because they need the wild and us humans will teach the animals how to live in the wild and for public to learn about them watch tv or when you get older become an animal explorer and we dont no what if the trainers abuse them so the will listen to them and scientist always do test on them and half of the animals born or brought here die during the test so now tell me do you think they should stay in the wild

yes and also you say they are breeding them wrong because animals dont no what to do in mating because they are confused what season it is because of the testing

Most zoos were designed and constructed in a time when the animal's comfort was less important than the enjoyment of the public. Since then, many zoos have undergone extensive renovations and updated their exhibits to better mimic the animal's habitat, and others (mine included) are raising the funding to do so. They are moving in the right direction, at least.

One the positive side, zoos have been essential in the efforts to conserve countless species. The population of the Arabian Oryx, for example, once dwindled down to only nine animals in the whole world. These animals were given to the Phoenix Zoo for breeding, and now, more than 1000 have been reintroduced into the wild. The Phoenix Zoo and others also either have conservation centers on site or donate a portion of proceeds to conservation efforts. The best zoos can keep their animals happy and healthy as well as give the public an opportunity to view animals in an exhibit as close to their natural habitat as possible, and hopefully inspire the public to care about that species. Public opinion is incredibly important to conservation.

Unfortunately, they are not perfect. The worst zoos, those with outdated and unsuitable exhibits and substandard animal care practices, should certainly be closed or at least overhauled. Even the best zoos struggle with boredom and obesity in some of their animals. I think, especially with the current trend in animal activism, that even these problems can be fixed

Zoos have been around since 1250 B.C., the first modern zoo, which was Schönbrunn Zoo, was established in 1752. Since then, in zoos animals were kept in cages which are just larger than them, but that was the past. Now Zoos are most used for protecting animals from extinction, illegal hunting and introduced species.

Zoos are actually fancy hotels excluding pillows and individually packed soap, but are only for “rich” animals. If an endangered animal gets in there, it might just even survive. Zoo keeper try their best to make animals feel home – they give them their natural prey, give them their natural environment, give them their natural temperature. Zoos also have very strict security, they don’t just let anybody walk in and do anything they want, even if the security does let them in, somebody has to be with them.

No, and there are some clear reasons why:

1) Zoos can help protect animals.

As you will know, there are all kinds of endangered animals in the world, some of which could not survive in the wild at the moment due to deforestation, global warming, hunting, etc. It is because of causes like this that many animals, such as the dodo, have gone extinct.

Zoos can help protect endangered species and helping endangered species is never a bad thing.

2) Zoos can help ill animals.

Sometimes animals run into problems and require help. This may be from the veterinarian, from lack of food, etc. Well, at zoos this really isn't a problem. Due to the fact that there are so many animals there will always be vets on hand to help if a bad situation arises. There will always be people to supply food, and there will always be experienced people who love animals and are willing to help them on hand.

Zoos are prepared to deal with animals that may fall ill, so they are sometimes better there than in the wild.

3) It allows for many jobs.

We are currently in a recession and many people are losing jobs all the time. Consequently, we need as many places, businesses, etc., to supply us with as many jobs as possible, and zoos are a brilliant way to do this. Zoos enable help to animals and all of the above, as well as entertainment for the public, and because of that many people are paid because of what they love to do. Many people love to help animals, and zoos can help people do that, too.

People can gain money and a living from the things that they love to do.

First off animals do not have rights...

One of the main functions of zoos is to breed endangered animals in captivity. If natural or human factors have made a species' own habitat a threatening environment then human intervention can preserve that species where it would certainly go extinct if there were no intervention. There are certainly problems with trying to conserve endangered species in this way but it is right that we should at least try to conserve them. And as long as animals are treated well in zoos there is no reason why conservation, education, and cruelty-free entertainment should not all be combined in a zoo. There is also, of course, a valid role for breeding in different environments such as large nature reserves.

Zoo keep animal from black hunters

Most of you talk about human rights, but when animals in their habit in nature, there's so many black hunters ready to catch them,or kill them just to collect a part or their body, such as elephant's ivory,so how about animals rights to life? think about that.

Zoo make animals life more longer

In fact, zoo help to keep the animals alive more longer if they are in captivity (zoo),in zoo,the animals got feed and etc,and zoo keep animals from black hunters. If animals live in nature, and the animals sick, nobody will take care of them, but in zoo there are many animals doctor ready to cure animals when they get sick.

Zoo increse awareness from people

In zoo with so many visitors, people will see so many species of animals and endanger species of animals, people will think, now,in this world,no many animals like that left. So,zoo can increace awareness from people because many people think about that.
