I will admit that this past summer I was very social because I had a car. But the summers before that, I didn't see too much of my friends because the only way to get there would have been to ask my parents to take me, but they had work. And then also, once there, I'd be stuck there. Now I see that I am more social during the school year than I used to be over the summer. I am a freshman in college, so I hang out with my friends every single day of the week. So I don't think that's an excuse.

I don't think that the president should extend school because children need their breaks. You don't want to overwhelm them in school and have them work all year round. I understand we want to compare or compete with the countries who are ahead but why should we put our children through all the work?

kids can barely concentrate with 180 days of school. if we continue throughout the summer students will become more distracted and less focused throughout school. Also it would effect kids with summer jobs who save their money for college

Is the schooling the problem, or the kids? Plenty of non-american children have ten-hour school days, six days a week, all year- they're doing just fine.

I myself am 16 and i know that we need our breaks. School is overwhelming as it is, i look forward to my breaks and use them for much needed rest. We HAVE tried year around school, it didn't work out. It was pulled from the system. I went to a year around school for about two years and it was pure hell. I hated being there all year. It was school school school, all the time.

I don't think extending the school year is going to help the decline of quality education in this country. Our problem is how we, as a society, view education and if we emphasize the importance of an education to our children. Parents must emphasize the importance of education to their children and get involved directly with their children's educations. Many parents in this country don't do that, unfortunately. The government must stop focusing on silly things such as whether or not a child has a rip in the knee of their jeans. Instead they need to focus on whether or not that child has a strong foundation in reading, writing and math. Then build upon that foundation.

The government keeps doing what they do best throwing money at everything without any brains behind it. They've tried that before with now success. WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE EXTENDED TIME, WE NEED BETTER NUTRITION, MORE QUALITY TEACHERS, INVOLVE PARENTS, OPTIONS, LESS MODIFIED FOODS, BETTER HEALTH INSURANCE AND MORE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUALS. Some schools have a year-long school system, where students have several weeks of school with normal weekends and then long, periodic breaks (e.g., six weeks of school to two weeks off). It makes sense to me. Class of 2010 :)

I'm not saying we SHOULD be in school year-round; i love summer. But a year-long school program does seem logical. I enjoy the social time of lunch and free periods. But the big picture here is why school does NOT go into the summer. The cost of air conditioning in all schools would stifle many budgets, and without it, computers would fry from the high temperatures. (multiple computers+small room=HOT) I think school throughout the year would be great, but if I didn't have school-round cold air, I would form an angry riot.

This is very true. Of course, there are some schools that were built years and years ago with a natural heating/cooling system--thick walls! They trap heat in the winter and keep rooms cool in the summer. Architectural adjustments could help schools, as well as increased revenue from student clubs, tuition, state aid, et cetera that would assist a year-long programme.

Lol whoever thinks kids need time off and more of a break advocate spoiltness. In poorer countries, kids would chop off their own hands to go to school the way we got to. Those who do never take it for granted. It's only in our countries that children complain about school, skip school for their own selfish purposes, lie about school, argue and fight in school, talk back to teachers etc. etc. We're spoilt beyond belief and some just want to be more and more spoilt.

Don't get me wrong. I love summer. But I think it'd be best for our education system if we had year-long school years with longer breaks in between. Summer break is just too long. It fosters procrastination when it comes to summer reading and allows students to completely forget the things they learned the year before, which could be prerequisites for the next year.

Lots of knowledge/skills are lost over the summer, especially math skills. I'm for year-round schools, which are sort of like extending school time into the summer!

I believe that a year round school system would be great. Just like it has been said six weeks in school 2 weeks off would be a great system. Just making sure that we get major holidays off: Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. Class of 2013 ya'll!
