Should we get paid at school?

This is an issue that is huge for students. I mean we go to school from 9:00AM to 3:00PM everyday from Monday-Friday. We typically go to school and do homework from Kindergarten- University and we never earn a cent, besides knowledge. I mean knowledge is important but shouldn't we get paid for our devotion and hard work? It's the same as going to work everyday, isn't it? Only instead of school knowledge you learn business knowledge. Isn't that kind of the same thing? I mean adults get paid for experience, why shouldn't we kids?Embarassed

We would learn to save money for what we really want because we could only afford so much, therefore we would learn what's really important. Like clothes. Most kids don't know what it is to actually have to buy what they need and want. Their parents simply buy it for them, they don't earn it. If we got paid at school parents could make kids buy their own things, therefore teaching more kids the lesson of budgeting.

Also wouldn't it be cool just to have our own money. That way we could get whatever we wanted when we wanted it. Instead of going and asking your parents and have them say no.

Kid's would be able to help parents if parents were on low income pay. They would be able to help each other, and families would make more money. Think about it, if you put poor children in school they would have more money to give to their parents. That could help break the poverty cycle

It could benefit poor children and low income parents

Isn't that significant? People, it could help end the poverty cycle. I mean don't most kids in poor countries stay home because they need the money? Well they could get the money and an education! It could really help the world!

Don't we want kids to earn responsibility too? I mean we could prepare for jobs faster! Then we could get double the education and at the same time get money for all our hard work! We don't just work at school either, we get homework too!

I do think it's a good idea to compensate students in some circumstances. I think market-principles can be applied to help encourage learning and growth.

For instance, I think its at least worth a try to start paying kids for A's and B's. I'm not sure what rate the market would bear, maybe $10 for each A and $5 for each B?

A secondary benefit would include an early education in personal finances.

I was always under the impression that schoolchildren were already being paid in knowledge.

We get paid in full. It is called knowledge. Why would the gov pay us? They are doing us a favor since in a lot of countries kids do not get a decent education and most of them just to get a decent education have to pay for it.

No you get an education so you can get paid later in life that is your payment if simply being an educated well rounded person is not enough for you.

Schools are like businesses, especially private schools and colleges. We pay them so that they can provide us with a service. If we were paid at school, it would be completely one-sided: it would be like the principal saying "Ok, I'm going to teach you things that are important for your futures and I'm going to pay you for it. What do I get out of it? Nothing(ok, maybe some satisfaction)." This would probably cause a shortage of teachers.

Well, I could be wrong, but I was almost positive that this exact topic had already been brought up...curious...

Side: This debate is a rerun

To answer your question...you have no experience as yet! For what you receive after 13 years of schooling plus undergraduate work, you've been amply and forever "paid" in full!

Kids might be more likely to get their hands on things such as drugs, alcohol or other inappropriate and dangerous items. They also might get things behind parents backs, causing distrust and stress.

Well, there is already a system of getting paid, as xaeon stated, where students are receiving something for their work. Knowledge. The simple truth is that we leave with more than what we came with; able to do more, think more, and be more in the future. As for the hard work and diligence, there is already a system to reward good habits. Those who study and work hard leave the years and years of schooling with more than those who don't study, don't work hard, have other priorities, or just don't care.

The amount of education you receive should be worth more than money. Plus you'd be getting your money back when you've already paid the school to begin with. Therefore, school would have to be free to attend plus they'd have to pay you. Where's the money for teachers, books, after school sports, etc.?

Such a dumb question, seriously.

This debate is no different from the one made a week ago. And it's a stupid idea to begin with. Age requirements, please.

I'm in total agreement. I'm sure this was created by some kid who thinks the world should revolve around him.
