"Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you." - Leviticus 11:9-12

and

"And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you." - Deuteronomy 14:9-10

Yet, Christian Gumbo recipe. Have most Christians not read the bible?

Side: Yes, they do.

I thought picking the good bits from the bible and rejecting the bad bits was just common practise now, and simply highlights the stupidity of religion and "The Word of God."

This is a particularly good example of bible filtering I feel. Eating non-fish sea creatures is more strenuously condemned than homosexuality and yet here we are. I will make an effort this evening to kick over the tables at my local oyster bar.

Hey, not that I'm Christian, but just bein' the Devil's - er, God's, - er, Jesus' - er, Bible writer's advocate here for a cotton pickin' minute: It don't say you go to hell, just says that its dirty, y'now. You should know, you water fowl you.

Side: No, they don't.

Indeed. The original Greek is 'qartov' meaning unclean. What was originally intended nobody knows. My point is relative e.g. the same word is used when referring to (presumed) homosexual behaviour. So, if biblical literalist believes gay people go to hell then so it must be for crustacean-eating heretics. Do they in practice - of course not! Why not? They're obviously not biblical literalists. Why not? Because that would be insane!

Honestly,I wonder the same thing! People are too busy adjusting the bible to fit their own desires when they should be trying to fit into God's good graces.

That same chapter in Leviticus 11 you are referring to also says it is not lawful to eat fish of the sea that DO NOT have FINS & SCALES. Shrimp does NOT have fins & scales, therefore they are UNCLEAN.

Christians don't go to hell, they just die and that's it... people around the dead christian go "I wonder if s/he's in hell right now, for eating those shrimp..." and then they blindly live out their lives until they die, and then more people hover around the dead christians thinking the same thing and then waste more time believing, and then they die, and then more people, and die, and more die, and die, die... die...

There's no way to stop it though... they will all just believe that an invisible omnipotent god that created the whole everything and is to incredibly complex that not even if all of the people in history were combined in one single consciousness could ever even come close to imagining what it would be like to imagine the greatness of, has told someone a long time ago that if they eat shrimp they will burn in eternal hellfire for all time.

Mosaic laws don't apply to Christians. Paul, in the new testament does speak against homosexuality, but not against shrimp. So unfortunately the argument is fairly good for standard Christians. Of course... whether or not Paul is a prophet of God just like Jesus was is open to a far more interesting debate.

So Christians should forget about the ten commandments then.

Actually, yes, since the laws of the Hebrews do not apply to Christians, they are also exempt from the Ten Commandments.

Early Christians were a sect of Judaism and so had to be circumcised which is a sign of the pact between the Hebrew god and that people. Since Christians are not circumcised and do not have a pact with god, they are exempt from damn near everything.

The Torah is a guidebook to life. The New Testament is a collection of letters. The two things are completely different. Most Christians have not read either and those that have read something nearly always read just the New Testament. They might as well throw out the Torah since they don't abide by it anyway.

One of the fundamental flaws of Christianity is that it claims to accept and acknowledge the Torah (Old Testament) and yet summarily dismisses 90% of it and keeps 10% for no reason.

I agree. Why pretend to be in compliance with any of the laws anymore instead if throwing away the things you don't like & keeping the things you do?

Part of the justification used to negate large portions of weird shit in the Old Testament is that Jesus Christ brought an end to the old law, establishing a supposed "new covenant." This is why Christians don't follow the vast majority of the old laws, because Jesus trimmed them down to their principles. They mostly use it as a sort of historical reference/ predictions for the future (prophecies), and look to the gospel on how to live their daily lives.

It makes sense as far as practicality goes. They'd probably lose a lot of popular support if they started requiring followers to sacrifice animals every Sunday after church.

As far as i know, christians don't keep kosher in accordance with the old ways, so therefore they believe that they won't go to hell. But in my own opinion, hell is a thought to make society a better more peaceful place, not necessarily an actual, physical place since there is no actual proof of it being there.

The end result of whether one goes to hell or not is not something so trivial that can be decided by one's diet.

Christians who eat shrimp won't go to hell because they have jesus in their hearts meaning they definitely go to heaven. if your a christian who dosent have jesus in their heart, i would ask him today and ask him to forgive yo..u, then it will be alright.

No God is that ridiculous. I happen to love shrimp and I'm a Christian.

I don't really get the reason for this rule. It just doesn't make sense how it would make us better Christians in the first place by not eating shrimp, or why eating it would make someone deserve eternity in hell. It's shrimp, that's it, nothing evil about it. Like the polyester-cotton mix rule, this just seems like a law not created by God, but by whoever was writing it at the time for their own reasons.

The same ones that believe that you should go to hell for being gay and they you should be killed for having sex before marriage do go to hell for eating shrimp. lol However, the sane ones don't go to hell for eating shrimp. The whole point of Christianity being separate from related religions such as Judaism is that Christians are supposed to live by the New testament. Now,eating shrimp..well shellfish in general was an abomination in the old testament along with just about everything else. But the new testament exist so that all of the old abominations become...well not an abomination.

I've heard a number of arguments on subject matter like this. Here's my argument. According to Christian and Jewish faith, Christ died for the sins of humanity (which Christians commonly mistaken as exclusive to Christianity), save from the unforgivable sin, i.e. denial of Christ and thinking tou can do his job better than he can. Now, I'm a Pagan-Christian, so I at least acknowledge and accept Christ as Lord and saviour. As long as you accept Christ as your lord and saviour, you are fine. All the stuff in the Bible is just fluff for all the ostrich-lemming hybrids to entertain themselves with, and in my opinion, those who take it upon themselves to pass judgement unto others are in immediate danger of acheiving that unforgivable sin.

Side: No, they don't.

Those Leviticus passages are dangerous and should be removed from the Bible.

People are born in sin, and must repent. John or Matthew...

Didn't Jesus die for our sins?

Side: No, they don't.

Yes, and for that we don't live under the same restrictions as others. We still must repent, but now there are no laws. Zero, zip, zilch, nada.
