TARP saved the economy, but how did the US taxpayer make out?
I am addressing the investment aspect of a bailout.

Not really sure of what you mean by: how did the US taxpayer make out? The programs within TARP that kept the credit market going, had a direct effect on consumers. The programs that kept the auto industry afloat, were clearly a waste of money because bankruptcy was the final outcome anyway. The bailout of AIG and money to international banking was IMO a ripoff for taxpayers. TARP money pumped into the housing market to forestall foreclosure was wasted because the foreclosures happened anyway. Overall we'll never know how much of TARP was wasted, but the economy is still running and that's good for the taxpayer. Side: Profit
