That government is best which governs least.

Often attributed to Thomas Jefferson, is the statement "that government is best which governs least". Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

It is demonstrably true that governments, left unchecked tend to grow in power over the governed. This begins as well intentioned laws and continues to grow, eventually becoming tyranny. The bill of rights describes how government will protect our rights. Today our federal government clearly is more occupied with its own well being. This is the primary reason for second amendment.

I am currently writing an essay on this subject and my position is yes, the statement is true. Here is my introductory paragraph:

Thomas Jefferson made the statement “that government is best which governs least.” In accordance with probably the most famous statement in the Declaration of Independence, this would appear to be true: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal... That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends...to effect their Safety and Happiness.” Considering the fact that the government is empowered by the people, for the people, its ability to govern can only be what the people want, and should be only what the people need. Anything more, if harmless is paternalism, and anything more if destructive, is tyranny.

I am not using this as proof, it is merely my opinion. I'm not really too much into politics, so any constructive criticism would be helpful.

You may not want to say "Jefferson made the statement 'that government is best which governs least.'" since he actually never said that. You might try finding a better quote, or just say it is often attributed to Jefferson like in the debate description.

Maybe "its ability to govern should only be what the people want", since a government often can do things people may not want if there is secrecy, deception, etc.

Might be worth investigating what "least" would mean.

I did not want to but that is the statement they gave me to write the essay. Eh maybe they wont mind if I change it.

I agree with that statement... I also agree that the US government is hypocritical for saying they believe in our forefathers, just because of that one line.

The government should be small and weaker then the people. Governments will always take power when given to them. When the government controls everything then it always leads to either economic collapse or oppression.

This is entirely out of context. Say you have a dictatorship whose sole purpose is to maintain his position by force. The only thing his government does is collect taxes. That's it. Very little government in your life then.

Proper government is a matter of function, not size. We should focus on its proper role.

EDIT: I should say that I usually agree with people who agree with what they think this statement means. Limiting the role of government is crucial. To adapt Einstein, The role of government should be as limited as possible, but no more.
