The 10 Commandments of debate logic.

Add New Argument

Don't we pretty much break commandment number 6 since we reduce the argument to this side or that side?

This side being our side, the side smart people pick.

And that side being their side, the side the idiots (liberals) pick. ;)

Hence the reason I prefer perspective debates, and would love to see for/against debates with multiple side choices.

These need to be more general, there are a million types of logical fallacies that are (arguably) more important, such as the nirvana fallacy, or the sunken cost fallacy. A list of commandments for proper debating is more useful to us, logical consistency is only part of the equation.

How about this? :

1) Be aware of cognitive biases.

2) Understand the basic principles and functions of logic (formal and informal).

3) Question everything, even "common knowledge" that we often take for granted.

4) Ensure that you've completely understood your fellow debater's claims, if not, ask for clarification where needed.

5) Avoid writing angry responses, if you can help it. You don't want to be "that guy".

Then there's the Holy commandment.

Never argue with an idiot.

They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ;)

This is absolutely great, I wish I could refer some of my debating enemies to this. All of my enemies are those who don't debate according to this criteria.

Number 5 should read, avoid emotionally charged responses though. Though I admit, I'd still be guilty of not following that one on occasion.

I considered putting that, instead. But:

1) I'm pretty sure that anger is really the only emotion that necessarily hampers proper debating.

2) It is hard to deal with anger while debating, which is why it is often taken out on the person that one is responding to.

3) If you suppress the tone of anger in your response, it is distracting and will probably cloud one's ability to read or write a strong response.

Which would include Cartman? I often disagree with Cartman, but I'm pretty sure that the only one that he doesn't do uncommonly is number 5. Then again, I often break 5, but that is almost exclusively when I'm talking with Dana.

You lost me at number 1.😉
