The whole point of it is to be a completely independent organization. Thats the only way to ensure that it does its job free from influence from any special interests. It does great work that my family personally benefited from. My dad was paying extra money for his credit card company because they were offering extra "security" with a monthly fee. But the CFPB investigated and found that the company wasnt actually doing any extra security at all beyond their normal security measures. So we were paying extra for literally nothing and the company was forced to refund all of that extra money in a lump sum to all consumers.

I bank with Wells Fargo.. They got caught in a HUGE consumer scam earlier this year. WHO caught 'em? Trump?? Mick Mulvaney?? Nahhh... The CFPB caught 'em..
