The Crusades

If you do not know what the Crusades were, go talk to your History teacher/professor/whathaveyou.

For the rest of you, do you feel that the Crusades were justified, and if so, why? If not, why not?

You don't have to write an entire essay on the subject.  Just your thoughts and opinions (so long as they are addressing the topic) will do.

Also please be aware that this is not a debate about war in general, but about all of the Crusades (pick any one from history, or address them all).  So even if you are against war as a principle, I would ask you to remove yourself from those views for a moment to answer the debate as objectively as possible.  I will not turn away 'war is wrong, so the crusades were wrong' arguments, but neither will I consider them solely on those words.  If you have a point that uses that as a springboard, go for it and maybe I'll be interested.

I'm on this side because from what I have learned, Europe was in pretty bad shape before the Crusades. Yes, the Crusades were stupid and pointless perpetrated by stupid and pointless people, but it was greatly influential to the European Renaissance.

I suppose it would have been around that time period. I can't promise any dates since I don't seem to remember for certain. Luckily my History class doesn't have us memorize dates.

Crusades were needless, and mind me for saying it, stupid.

They were wars fought at a time when neither side was actually trying to gain anything, they just didn't think they could live in a world with someone who's different them.

They fought over land that both of their books claimed to be holy, yet neither of them had more proof and neither could accept that maybe if that lad was holy for one it was holy for both, and that they could both pray and be holy their. Instead they fought...on their holy land, tell me that's not ironic.

The real irony, I think, is that they did it all in the name of their god when the Christian god is about love and acceptance, not war and hostility. Note I said 'Christian' god. I'm not even considering the OT at this point. It just makes it even more awkward.

Note that though I say this, I'm not taking either side at this point in time. I have arguments for both sides, correct or not.
