One reason we have so many alcoholics today is because the Left refuses to shame the behavior that leads to it. This is the new no fault political correct world. They tell us that alcoholism is not your fault, it's a disease. Well, if it's a disease how come only people who choose to drink heavily get this disease? If you choose to never abuse alcohol, you will never be an alcoholic. IT'S THAT SIMPLE! It's not a disease, it's a choice. Until we start shaming the behaviors that cause so many problems in our world, we will never fix the problems. We have to first admit the problem before we can fix it. It does not matter if some people are more susceptible to becoming an alcoholic. Those same people will never become alcoholics unless they choose to abuse alcohol. @FromWithin I largely agree with you, although "shame" is only proper if they adamantly deny the issue and/or (somehow) demand respect for their behavior (as, amazingly, often happens--not just for Alcohol but elsewhere as well e.g. "Fat Shaming", "Slut Shaming", ect.) If they are not belligerent, and don't demand respect for their (in many ways) irresponsible behavior, than I think the culture should foster open conversation and alternatives to the current lifestyle rather than "shaming"--although certainly not encourage it (these aren't activities to be "proud" about) 2

I'm not sure if you understand what I mean by shaming the behavior. I'm not talking about shaming individuals by name for things they have chosen to do. I believe society should be speaking out on irresponsible behavior in the same manner it does with animal abuse, smoking, taking drugs, etc. Remember the commericals where they showed our brains on drugs? They could be showing our livers on alcohol. They could be showing the broken homes and lost jobs from the results of alcoholism. Look at the commericals pulling on your heart strings by showing starving abused animals. Where are the commercials pulling at our heart strings by showing unloved fatherless children, or children being raised by case workers. I believe they should be shaming promiscuous sex in the same manner. Show the broken homes, the fatherless children, the unwed mothers on welfare, the venereal diseases, etc. etc. The Left hates speaking out on irresponsble immoral behavior because they hate any notion of morality. It's a dirty word to them. Their answer is always the same.... more social bandaids we can't afford. The more social programs you create to address the problems created by irresponsbility, the more irresponsibility there will be. The end result is more votes for the Democrat Party, which is why I believe they hate to shame irresponsible behavior and hate mentioning moral values for the sake of our children. A member of my wife's family, close to us, was an alcoholic who eventually developed dementia from it and over a spiral of decline eventually had his body shut down and die from it. There are many ways alcohol can kill you. But with that said, there are many people who drink alcohol without becoming alcoholics or doing serious damage to themselves, and there is plenty of evidence of beneficial health from moderate drinking of some types of alcoholic beverages. Basically, if you're going to drink, please drink responsibly. |
