The Government should put more funding into Advanced Sciences

When I was studying for my PhD in Geotechnical Engineering (University of Texas), the University had decided to reduce funding for the sciences by 50% so that they could replace their sporting equipment. Now I know popular culture and media promotes sports and athlectics over science and academics; so it is understandable why the Dean decided to switch funding like that.

Now I am retired (with a few more PhDs), I believe that it is the responsibility of the Government to improve the overall intelligence of our population and place more sponsership in academic, specifically scientific, learning in University to ensure that the next generation is able to achieve the skills they want.

I think that its a little unstable now due to our radical budget. But lets say that it gets fixed. Then I would say absolutely. We would have a generation that would understand much more. Science has many branches so you could do computer science, earth science, astronomical science, and the list goes on and on. I feel this would be good once our economy balances out.

Yes I agree that intellect will come eventually take more importance than athletics. As technology progresses, it needs more and more funding as the complexity of the specific project increase. In the 1940s, the Roosevelt Administration spent millions of dollars on advanced sciences which led to great technological gains. E.X the atomic bomb.

I suppose I'm just used to lecturing at universities, they do like it if you state your credentials before hand.

I've often seen cases where lecturers have forgotten to outline their expertise at the start of a speech, studies show that when this happens a higher percentage of the audience will doubt the reliability of the content. I should know, I did a PhD in Sociology ( in which I wrote a paper on Paranoid Social Cognition), while post-nominal letters may seem unimportant to many, it can be surprising how significant they are others.

Well, I was just giving you a hard time, that's sort of my thing around here. As for your debate... I agree that it would be important to put more funding into advanced science if we had the money to do that. What about the deficit? I don't think the government should be putting more funding into anything right now.
