An age in which fascism has become a term of abuse is unlikely to analyse it profoundly.

His private conversations, however, though they do not overturn his reputation as an anti-Communist, qualify it heavily. Hermann Rauschning, for example, a Danzig Nazi who knew Hitler before and after his accession to power in 1933, tells how in private Hitler acknowledged his profound debt to the Marxian tradition. "I have learned a great deal from Marxism" he once remarked, "as I do not hesitate to admit". He was proud of a knowledge of Marxist texts acquired in his student days before the First World War and later in a Bavarian prison, in 1924, after the failure of the Munich putsch. The trouble with Weimar Republic politicians, he told Otto Wagener at much the same time, was that "they had never even read Marx", implying that no one who had failed to read so important an author could even begin to understand the modern world; in consequence, he went on, they imagined that the October revolution in 1917 had been "a private Russian affair", whereas in fact it had changed the whole course of human history! His differences with the communists, he explained, were less ideological than tactical. German communists he had known before he took power, he told Rauschning, thought politics meant talking and writing. They were mere pamphleteers, whereas "I have put into practice what these peddlers and pen pushers have timidly begun", adding revealingly that "the whole of National Socialism" was based on Marx.

Let’s cut through all the clutter and get straight to the main issues surrounding Donald Trump and allegations of anti-Semitism.

First, to suggest that President Trump dislikes Jews would have us believe that he despises his own daughter and grandchildren, when precisely the opposite seems to be true. Ivanka seems to be the apple of his eye. Indeed, when his daughter was dating Jared Kushner, an orthodox Jew from a famously observant family, her father could have easily dissuaded her from converting; instead, he publicly supported her and threw a kosher wedding.

Trump as anti-Semite is not implausible, but it is absurd and libelous. It would also suggest that his strong support for Israel is inauthentic, when it’s something he has worn on his sleeve for his entire adult life.

But, is Trump sending dog whistles to white supremacist supporters who dislike Jews? Is his failure, until yesterday, to publicly decry anti-Semitism a result of a fear of alienating racist backers?

To answer that, we have to identify two different varieties of modern anti-Semitism.

The first is hatred of Israel and a spoken desire to annihilate the Jewish state. Think of Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. On these threats, Trump has thus far been far better than Barack Obama, who legitimized Iran with the nuclear deal.

While Trump was campaigning against the Iran deal, then-President Obama was literally sending hundreds of millions of dollars by plane in cash to the mullahs, even while they openly referred to Israel as a cancer that must be completely obliterated.

WASHINGTON — Jewish billionaire megadonor Haim Saban lashed out at Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison Friday, calling him “clearly an anti-Semite and anti-Israel individual.”

At the Brooking Institution’s annual Saban Forum, which is hosted and funded by the media mogul, Saban chimed in from his seat in the audience during a question-and-answer session between CNN’s Jake Tapper and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman. Tapper had earlier in the session asked the Israeli minister about Ellison’s controversial bid to chair the Democratic National Committee.

While he prefaced his remarks by saying Ellison’s Muslim faith was a “non-issue” and that some of his statements now have been more Zionist than that of Zionism visionary Theodore Herzl, Saban designated Ellison as fundamentally hostile to Jews and the Jewish State.

“If you go back to his positions, his papers, his speeches, the way he has voted, he is clearly an anti-Semite and anti-Israel individual,” he said. “Words matter and actions matter more. Keith Ellison would be a disaster for the relationship between the Jewish community and the Democratic Party.”

Saban, an Egyptian-born Israeli-American, is a major donor to Democrats. He and his wife Sheryl gave more than $12.5 million to former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s latest bid for the White House.

Since 2007, Saban has been well known as one of the highest overall individual contributors to the Democratic Party. In 2002, he wrote a $7 million check to fund the DNC’s headquarters building in Washington, D.C.

Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, has come under fire over previously undisclosed contacts with Reverend Louis Farrakhan, head of the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam movement.

Ron Halber, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, said that Ellison “demonstrated exceedingly poor judgment by participating in a meeting with one of America’s most notorious anti-Semites and the leader of a regime that has called for Israel’s annihilation,” and therefore “should resign as deputy chairman of the Democratic Party.”

Ellison’s ouster is also being urged by the National Council of Young Israel (NCYI), whose membership includes more than 100 Orthodox synagogues, and the Coalition for Jewish Values (CJV), which represents several hundred Orthodox rabbis.

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted that Ellison’s participation in the Rouhani meeting along with Farrakhan was “extremely disturbing” and that “the presence of Louis Farrakhan should have been a red flag” for Ellison.

David Bernstein, president of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, wrote on Twitter that Ellison’s actions were “very disturbing…Dining with hatemongers is not OK.”

Ellison didn’t merely defend Farrakhan, he was a follower. He didn’t only appear as a local spokesman for the Nation of Islam, he appeared to defend a Minneapolis anti-Semite who said “Jews are among the most racist white people I know.” Ellison didn’t just support Stokely Carmichael’s right to speak at the University of Minnesota on free speech grounds, he argued that a man who claimed Zionists had joined the Nazis in killing Jews was a useful ideological counterpoint at that school. Ellison wasn’t just critical of “Israel’s policy toward Palestinians,” he was critical of the idea of Israel altogether.

When Mother Jones interviewed a classmate of Ellison’s who claimed he had gone around saying “European white Jews are trying to oppress minorities all over the world” and talked about “Jewish slave traders” — typical rhetoric for Nation of Islam types — there was no denial from the congressman’s office. The congressman only distanced himself from anti-Semites during his 2006 run for Congress, and then only when right-wing bloggers started pointing out his past.

A photo of former President Barack Obama and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan from 2005 surfaced on Thursday after more than a decade of a journalist keeping the encounter under wraps.

The photo of Obama and Farrakhan was taken at a Congressional Black Caucus meeting in 2005, but it never reached the public eye after the caucus asked the photographer, Askia Muhammad, to hand it over in fear that it would stain Obama’s political future.

“I sort of understood what was going on,” Muhammad told Talking Points Memo, who was allowed to print the picture with his permission. “I promised and made arrangements to give the picture to Leonard Farrakhan,” the leader’s chief-of-staff and son-in-law.

The Congressional Black Caucus allegedly contacted Muhammad in a “panic” shortly after the event and asked him to hand over the photograph. Muhammad said he made a copy of the photograph on his computer before he gave “the disk” from his camera over to a staff member.

“Realizing that I had given it up, I mean, it was sort of like a promise to keep the photograph secret,” the photographer said, while explaining he didn’t release his copy because he didn’t want to betray that promise.

“I was really, I guess, afraid of them,” he continued. Muhammad was afraid that someone would “break into his apartment” in search of the photo, like “that Watergate crap” if he was to ever release it.

During the 2008 presidential election, Farrakhan made headlines for his alleged ties to then-Senator Obama and his anti-Semitic remarks, which Obama denounced during a debate.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — With just two days to go before Minnesota’s primary election, domestic abuse allegations are surfacing against U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a candidate for Minnesota attorney general.

The accusations came in a Facebook post published on Saturday night by Austin Monahan, the son of Ellison’s former girlfriend, Karen.

In it, he writes, in part, “In the middle of 2017, I was using my moms computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file. I found over 100 text and twitter messages and video almost 2 minutes long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a f — b — and telling her to get the f — out of his house.”

Keith Ellison, a U.S. House member and deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, confronted allegations Sunday of domestic abuse from a former girlfriend.

The allegation that the physical abuse was caught on video was posted to Facebook late Saturday night by the woman's son, days before Minnesota's primary election, where Ellison is facing off against four other Democrats for the open state attorney general's seat.

Ellison has represented the Minneapolis-centered 5th District for six terms and was the perceived front-runner in the attorney general's race. In a written statement Sunday, Ellison denied the incident.

He said he was in a "long-term relationship" that ended in 2016 but he denied the allegation of abuse.

"I still care deeply for her well-being," he wrote. "This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false."
