The next American Civil War
Who will it be between
It will be over a George Washington quote.
Who will it be between and who will you support?
Well, we NEVER finished the first one, so it'll be between the same antagonists.. We got an angry right wing mainly in the south, and we got an even angrier left wing located in the north.
Who will I support? The good guys, of course.
I really don't believe there will be another civil war, per say. Not because I just "hope" there won't be one, but because I really don't think the people that push the hardest to have things their way to the detriment of others, want to come out from behind their keyboards. The people that marched in the White Supremacist rally in Charlottesville have been pointed out online and their identities have been given, some have even lost their jobs because of it. We live in an age where privacy is almost a pipe dream now, and repercussions for what much of society deems inappropriate behavior follows someone everywhere. What you do or support is going to be held against you for years and years and years, even if you change your view and switch sides, so to speak.
If we have a civil war, I think it will be from behind keyboards and monitors, not on an actual battlefield with guns. But that's just my thought on it, I honestly don't know. I DO hope we won't have one but if we do I think we need to adjust what our concept of war is.
Oh, but if that were only so.. I've been presenting right wingers with logical, Constitutional, American arguments for 50 years.. They USED to listen, and argue back.. Not any more.
We need to FINISH the civil war. Look. What war have we won where we let the vanquished KEEP their flag, and KEEP their treacherous statues and monuments???
The Civil War, and that was a BIG mistake.. Let's FINISH it.
Well, I mean look at who we have on this site alone. Many of the people aren't looking to debate so much as stand on a soapbox and spout the same thing over and over again.
I don't think we should be hiding from out mistakes, when we do that we run the risk of trying to erase history (much like removing statues) and then repeating it. The confederate flag doesn't particularly bother me, mainly because it isn't just a symbol of racism anymore. Where I live it's almost like a state flag......but for multiple states. Many of the people who proudly display it aren't proclaiming they promote slavery, just that they are southern. Now I GET why it is seen in a negative light so don't get me wrong, I just think the reasoning is different than what's being presented by the side that wants them gone. I also don't believe that statues should be destroyed. At most they should be removed and placed in a museum with a plaque stating why it was put up but also stating why the viewpoint was wrong. Instead of trying to erase a way of thinking we should be using it as a way to teach why that particular way of thinking is wrong, and using it as a way to reach out to those that still hold it.
Browbeating someone is never a way to get them to learn. I remember when the controversy with the confederate flag first started and people rumored that it was going to be banned, it suddenly popped up EVERYWHERE. Banning something still deeply ingrained in our culture is the surest way to make it more popular, when before it was slowly going away on its own.
