The strawman strawman.

Basically my stance is that I'm tired of the strawman card because it seems that anyone can use it in any argument. What are you're thoughts on the strawman card?

Yeah it is the option to those who have no response or argument.

I'm not saying I have a problem with the theory of a strawman argument. There are times where the strawman card is valid but it's way way overly used on this website.

Well, it's true that the strawman card is pulled at inappropriate times, but I think we can just attribute it to red herrings and such.

Like iamdavidh's ability to pull out many red herrings in order to avoid a real debate on the subject... really, he'll try and convince you that you believe in something that you don't. Good thing he's not good at it.

It's important to point out the many logical fallacies that others use in order to cut to the important part. Not many will listen, but that'll just make them look stupid, hopefully.

To some people it is just a "trigger" word as an attempt to stop the opponent in their tracks for fear of committing a logical fallacy. I've encountered maybe like 3 people (can't remember them off the top of my head, but they publicly accused me in a debate on this site) who used the "straw man" accusation against me, when it clearly was not. It implied that they had a false definition of what a straw man argument was.

It's definitely abused, but I don't think it shouldn't be used anymore. When used appropriately, it's simply a great way to explain why their argument doesn't work.

Side: Disagree

It can be overused and/or inappropriately used, just like any other accusation of logical fallacy. This doesn't mean it's invalid when used correctly, though you do raise a point; it's often used incorrectly.
