Discussion moderating by....MuckaMcCaw (I hope)  and Thousandin1 (I hope)

This debate will not have a preset number of rounds but each opponent will cease responding once they feel their position has been adequately presented. After Jace and I call it a dead horse, both moderators will also weigh in as to what their current position is, and give their opinion on which side of the argument they believe was argued most persuasively.

Wait? So all who is not you, Jace, Mucka or Thousand are not welcome? Create your own community if that's what you're lookin' for. And don't say that's not what you meant because it's obvious it was. ;)

1. This debate WAS created in the "formal" debate community.

2. It was meant to be a debate between myself and JACE

3. I wanted Thousandin1 and MuckaMcCaw to moderate and help move the discussion forward/toward consensus.

4. You just posted here to try to disrupt my effort, and make me seem like an elitist prick. And don't say that's not what you wanted because it's obvious it was. ;)

1. It showed on the CreateDebate community home page so it was shared with that community.

2. Duh.

3. Duh.

4. How would my posting disrupt your effort? Jace can still post, can he not? As for the elitist prick comment.... I can't make you seem like an elitist prick, only you can do that.

For the record:

I've never thought of you as elitist.

Reviving this somewhat belatedly as it somehow flew past my radar... feel free to engage or not.

Religion is commonly defined as: "[1] n. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. [2] n. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. [3] n. The life or condition of a person in a religious order." (Source: The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Edition) I contend that an alternative definition ought not to be accepted in place of the common usage without accompanying and defensible rationale.

Atheism is commonly defined as: "[1] n. Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods. [2] n. The doctrine that there is no God or gods." (Source: The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Edition) I suggest the same standard for deviation from common usage as proposed above.

Neither a lack of belief nor active rejection of deistic/theistic belief presents a basis from which to conclude that the term "atheism" fits within the definitional confines of the term "religion". Even were one to contend that atheism requires some form of faith or belief to adopt, the nature of that faith/belief is distinctly negative when contrasted with the positive belief associated with religion as it is commonly defined.
