Not only is it acceptable, it is one of the best strategies for dealing with others in game theory. If you treat people the same regardless of how they treat you then they have no reason to treat you well and will exploit your good nature. The most optimal strategy for dealing with others under game theory is "modified tit for tat". This strategy is the same as tit for tat in that you respond in turn to the behavior of others (e.g. positive response to positive behavior). It differs in that the first time someone treats you badly, you treat them nicely once, in order to allow them a chance to correct their mistake. If the person continues to behave badly you then give tit for tat. Side: yes

There is a difference between "hurt him back" and simply stopping the offer of further help. You always have the right to decide to withdraw your offer of help. Help is not mandatory, and ending help is not hypocritical. In comparison, to throw civil behavior out the window and simply become hurtful for the sake of hurtful makes you a hypocrite and not much better than the other guy. Side: no
