To publish or not to publish?

How should reporters evaluate whether or not to publish information that could harm an individual or jeopardize a person’s job? When is it ethical (right) to publish this information? When is it unethical (wrong)?

I don’t think most reporters have choice as they are employed to write for the newspaper / company they are employed by , its very hard to launch an objection to a piece you’re asked to write without putting your position in jeopardy , I would think anyway

I think it's important to report that, apart from Dermot, and as and at 19.32 G.MT. on the 22nd-March-2018, every respondent to this thread has joined one hour ago and all have been awarded one point.

Now is that or is that not a coincidence?

Pray tell me newbies, what's your explanation of this quite phenomenal, freaky coincidence.

That it is a debate from a school class like many others on this site? Duh

If they don’t publish then the person continues to do wrong. Like if someone murders them someone needs to speak out and since it’s their job so it should be them

I think they should not publish because that is their personal life everyone shouldn’t be able to know all their stuff. It’s like any person in general as well many people are unconfortable or not good with people publishing their personal information.

I feel like reporters are right for publishing information that is true and right even if it’s bad for that person because people have the right to know

1 point

Depending on what they are realizing because if they are arming anyone in any way then yes but if it’s about someone personal life then no.

It’s good for reporters to call out the wrong doings in the government because then the people of the US know what’s going on for real. Reporters shouldn’t put the personal things like private things because then they could lose reputation and other things like that.

1 point

I believe they should publish it. If they are in the wrong they should call them out their wrong doings. People have the right to know what's going on in their country.

I disagree with it and I believe they should not be able to publish anybody’s personal life because we all don’t like it and it’s there personal buisness and others wouldn’t like if that happened to them

1 point

I believe it’s okay to publicize real FACTS about somebody or a situation such as a scandal that involves somebody with authority or power. If they reperesent us I’d like to know anything that could jeopardize my life and future. It’s wrong when they are only rumors and just false allegations.

Reporters should be able to publish any information and let the public know of any frauds that the government has done. But they shouldn't switch up the information.

1 point

If the info hurts a bad person than go for it but if it’s info that no one cares about and is irrelevant about a person who just carry’s on in life than just keep your mouth shut

1 point

i believe that reporters should publish anything without caring about those people because they shouldn't care about their reputation or the consequences because they knew what they are doing something bad .

1 point

I feel reports shouldn't publish personal information unless it involves the community then they should because it's basically there job to.

1 point

I feel like the media shouldn't talk or publish about personal lives, but if the people are involved then THEY DESERVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH

1 point

Yes I do think they should because they are letting the world know what’s going on
