Trying to tailor debates and arguments in order to increase your points is a fools errand.

Since people can down vote you for whatever reason tickles their fancy and since they don't have to leave a reason for their action, you can't learn from your mistakes and make your arguments and/or debates better in order to increase your points.

The best you can do is be true to yourself, post whatever you want and let nature take its course. Don't worry about it. It will all work itself out in the end.

I say it depends on why your getting downvoted. Here is where you should care:

- If your argument was poorly presented

- If you brought up irrelevant material

- If, instead of arguing, you made personal attacks

- If you presented personal anecdotes as proof

- If you made unsubstantiated broad generalizations

If the reason that you got downvoted was just because you were merely expressing a controversial opinion then you shouldn't worry about the down votes. As for jokes, I guess it depends on the joke.

Edit: I just realized one more i should have added to the list

- If you are a Republican

I liked the last one.

I agree with the personal attack one.

I don't know what to do about the rest because a lot of people don't specify the reason so you're left wondering, "Who did I piss off this time? ;)"

Either way, I don't care about points. Maybe if I lost them all ;)
