Video Games must be banned
Hi my name is Aquif
This debate will talk about why I think that video games are bad.
My team and I have been arguing that theses games are bad because they can influence crime via violent video games and can make you very unhealthy.

Hi my name is Natalia I am on Aquif's team and I also strongly believe that that video games are bad. My reason for this is because it can put a very bad influence of crime if played violent video games. I think that science games like GTA V and Call of Duty games came out. It has increased crime rates in teenagers. Video games like GTA V have guns and bombs that are real guns and bombs. I think that teenagers don't need to know about guns or bombs. Just curious, but do you have any relevant research/data to back up your claims? Just because you feel that teen violence has been increasing doesn't mean that it actually is. I just did a quick Google search and arrived at the U.S Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention website. Here you see a graph charting the juvenile violent crime arrest index from 1980 to 2011. Call of Duty is a game you specifically listed as causing an increase in violence amongst teens. The first title of the franchise was released in 2003. The franchise really started to hit its peak popularity in 2009 with Modern Warfare 2, and in 2010 with Black Ops 1. Interestingly, the juvenile Violent Crime Index arrest rate reached a historic low-point in 2011, and has been trending downward, not upward, since the mid 1990's. Until you can provide some convincing data and research showing that A: teen violence is on the rise, and B: that video games are a direct cause, I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with your position at this time. I would argue that overall violence is actually decreasing over time, it is only the media coverage that is increasing, so you hear about it all the time. Side: They good for people

Certainly it is good for children to play--in fact, kids are not getting enough free play today, leading to high rates of ADHD and diminished social capacities. Kids learn many things through play, especially friendly rough-and-tumble play which helps the brain develop in multiple ways including building social competence.
Some people argue that activities like videogame play that on face value seem to be bad for you are really good for you. Steven Johnson points out how much more complex popular culture is today than in the past, including the complexity of videogames (compare PacMan with Sims games). He argues that the increased complexity promotes intelligence. For example, when you play a videogame, it is often a frustrating learning experience that requires you to repeatedly problem solve to learn the game. In fact, James Paul Gee suggests that you even learn "the scientific method" through the necessary trial and error of figuring out how to meet goals in the game. According to these criteria, playing constructive and prosocial games like Sims can be "good for you" with at least one caveat---as long as you have a balanced life with real-life face-to-face friendships and enjoyment in socializing. Why worry about the latter? Because playing videogames typically keeps active primitive parts of the brain that are not social nor cognitively sophisticated. So you need to balance videogame play time with experiences that use these parts of the brain. Or you can develop a "game brain." credits:http://www.psychologytoday.com/ Side: They good for people

The current scientific data on this subject is inconclusive, at best. And I find it odd that people only ever talk this way in relation to video games. No-one would argue that films, for example, should be banned because they can promote violence. It's probably got something to do with video games being a new medium, and with the common misconception that they are nothing but "child's play". Side: They good for people

Violence is in our nature, it's not given to us, it's not earned, it's not taught, it's not influenced. We've had numerous seriously violent wars throughout the history of mankind, and the first video game was only published in the early 70's, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe you can find a link between teen violence, and video games - but do you really think it would change anything if we banned video games? Videogames don't create violent teengers - violent teenagers play video games. Another study shows violent teenagers tend to eat cereal for breakfast. Do you think there is a link there??? Considering we are speaking English, I think it is safe to say the majority of this website is either American or British, both of which have free markets and the right to sell whatever video games we want. As if that wasn't enough reason, studies have shown certain video games leading to hand eye coordination, fast reflexes, higher multitasking abilities, and more. As for these games and their connection to crime, that is not proven. I, speaking as a teenage boy owning GTA, CODbo2 and more, do not feel compelled in the least to go on a random killing rampage. They only make you violent if you let your self become violent. True if you play to much you can get not enough exercise but that is why you have to keep that in check and schedule your self which is once again a personal decision. They also increase hand-eye coordination which can help you. Also not all video games are violent and thinking they are is biased. Some video games are educational as well and even some can help you stay fit such as exercise games or something along the lines of an Xbox Kinect game that involves a lot of motion. Over all your idea is biased and just bad. Side: They good for people
