Was Evolution the greatest theory ever ?

In an issue of Free InquiryRichard Dawkins talks about evolution — specifically, the power of Charles Darwin‘s theory.

He calls evolution “a big idea, arguably the most powerful idea ever.”

It echoes Daniel Dennett, who has called evolution “the greatest idea ever to occur to a human mind.”

Specifically, Dawkins uses a formula which he calls the “Explanation Ratio”:

Yes

I would go along with the most CLARIFYING theory ever. Until then, man lived in a state of confusion and the fog of fear of where we came from. THAT was scary! We even had to FEAR thinking "bad thoughts" that our religious keepers frowned upon.! It opened our minds. As Al Einstein said: "Great minds have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." (Enter Charles Darwin.) They still do. There are many theories that could vie for the "greatest ever".

Thanks for that and another marvellous quote from Einstein

Yes, although I would say it's edged from theory to fact, with a few sects still in adamant denial. The Big Bang theory is also pretty fantastic. Between the two, hm, the origins of the universe, or the origins of life....tough call on which one is the greatest.

Side: Yes

What about this consideration?

The big bang theory has been heavily flawed and people rarely understand the revision from string theory, which was also flawed when proposed.

I am curious about the string theory, it's difficult to prove but my knowledge of it is very limited. I'm reading right now, an article that suggests the universe had no beginning, like the Big Bang, which would also explain dark matter.

http://www.livescience.com/49958-theory-no-big-bang.html

It's pretty interesting.

So I suppose, based on the Big Bang theory being so flawed and now challenged....I think evolution would win out between the two. Thank you for pointing that out, when I went to research it I was lead to that article.

Side: Yes

Yes. It is the greatest nonsensical theory ever.

Take it or leave it.

Well done Jeffrey 👏👏👏👏👏 you said yes and inserted a full stop 🙀 which to rational people denotes agreement 🤔

Then you disagree with .... yourself 🙀 which throws up a very interesting situation .... are you schizophrenic 😳

YOUR final comment does indeed confirm my 'diagnosis ' because you very helpfully supply the evidence for my claim as in ....

Take it Or leave it 🤔🤔

Can you honestly not post anything that isnt about an hour long? Which part is relevant?

Side: Yes

Probably the part where he raps.

If it's the same video - he normally just does clickbait, so I'm not clicking.

Hello, again. Indeed I did call you weak minded that is a description of what you are not even an insult just truth. Also in reference to the bible and the verse mathew 7:1 he is speaking of judgment of heaven and hell. Otherwise by your poor logic we cannot judge that bacon taste amazing. And again

"you are strong in is not Biblical faith or you would know everything I said is easily referenced in the Bible. You have proven that you are not interested in the truth"

It is simply not my truth to prove, it is you saying this=this and not explaining how then you tell me to go find out why. This is your point and the burden of truth is on you. Not my job to complete your own argument for you. Sorry but even thou I am the only one carrying this argument I will not do your side as well.

Listen Uriney, no point in me repeating myself with you, you're not listening, you don't want the truth and all you are doing is insulting me and I'm done. Because of your ongoing obstinate attitude I'm going to ban you quickly from my discussions.

You call me weak minded while you fail to recognize that I placed together many Bible passages which are easily referenced if you look up the phrases. I have no burden of proof for idiots who call me a liar before they check their own reasoning.

You're being a jerk and I assume you will maintain your stubborn as a mule, or a jack ass, attitude so I'm just going to do with you what I do with so many others here who just want to make nitpicky arguments about personality....tell you to take a hike and don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. You offer noting of value to my discussions and even less than no value by riding your little hobby horse whining.

Greatest? Maybe, but there is one contender I'd like to mention: The Theory of Relativity - Einstein. Quite a brilliant idea from a brilliant man. It made us question Newton's Laws of Gravity. I'm sure if anyone's interested they can use the expanse of the internet to look it up.

Side: No

Yes , what Einstein achieved was remarkable and his best period of work was in a flurry of groundbreaking discoveries in a relativity ( intended ) short period of time .

Darwin really caused a major shit storm ..... I like that :)

Side: No
1 point

If we want to talk about shit flipped, we could bring in Galileo; whom the Catholic church put under house arrest after he proved heliocentrism was a sham.

Side: No

No, there have been more.

Newton discovered classical physics, and showed that the laws of nature are uniform throughout the universe.

Mendel showed that what you are is a result of genes that can be inherited.

Hume showed that science is just about throwing arrows in the dark, with assumptions that can not be proved.

In the East, Chanakya had anticipated much of the political philosophy in about 300 BC.

Einstein and Darwin are already mentioned.

And we're still just touching the iceberg of progress. But if it's an iceberg, then all the ventures on irrationality have been the salty water around it.

Evolution is the most useless and worthless idea people could come up with...even more than useless and worthless, it's evil...degrading mankind into animals for which all that really matter is survival of the fittest.

Side: No

survival of the fittest.

Of course you'd say that.

After all, you're an obvious contradiction to this theory.

On the Origin of Species is 800 pages of direct proof. Evolution is a fact.

What you call animal bones are rocks that have replaced animal bones over millions of years. The substance of matter can be scientifically tested and it can be proved how the rock got there. It creeped into the space of decaying matter.

Your ignorance is truly appalling as is your ridiculous video , why is it mainly uneducated Americans like you who resist what is FACT ?

This is on par with gravity as the most likely theory for a non-scientist to prove or concoct.

Some of the greatest theories include m-theory (which is an edited, correct version of the brilliant but flawed string theory) as well as countless others including the very theory that round objects underneath non-round ones can make moving heavy weights so much easier. (The wheel made what humans can do over a large landspace explode in potential)

Side: No

Evolution was a major breakthrough, but the biggest? I'd beg to differ.

So many other discoveries have more effectively contributed to modern society; Charles Darwin was extremely helpful in a biological aspect though.

Side: No

No not even close, in fact compared to other scientific theories such as the theories of gravity and relativity, it's not nearly as well supported by scientific evidence, it's one of the shakiest and least stable theories out there, which is why most of Darwin's original theory has been superseded by new theories.

Dawkins of course is more of a dogmatist than a scientist so his fertilization of evolution is just the typical attempt by atheists to treat evolution as a "replacement" for religion or a creation story.

But objectively speaking, its one of the least consequential theories and most of the talk about it is just hype. Mathematical and formal logic theories are also much better at explaining quite a bit of things than evolution, or most 'natural science' is anyway.

The fact that you have evolutionary biologists who can't even figure out how to get a date, when even cavemen could do that is testimony to how vapid it is in actual day-to-day life, lol
