Was Oxford fair to Aung San Suu Kyi?

"Aung San Suu Kyi is to be stripped of the Freedom of the City of Oxford, where she studied as an undergraduate, over her response to the Rohingya crisis."
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/oct/04/aung-san-suu-kyi-to-be-stripped-of-freedom-of-the-city-of-oxford
She is seen by the West as a great leader and promoter of democracy but she has done nothing to stop the ethnic cleansing of the  Rohingya Muslims by the majority Buddhists, even denying it is happening.

I believe Oxford were fair and showed courage in their decision the woman is a disgrace and it's pathetic to see individuals fawning and licking up to her , my government has called for her to be stripped of her Nobel prize and freedom of Dublin City honour ....

From the Irish Times ......

It is up to Dublin City Council to decide whether to strip Nobel peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi of the freedom of the city, Minister of State Helen McEntee has told the Dáil.

Ms McEntee was responding to calls for the Myanmar political leader to be stripped of the honour and of her Nobel prize following government violence against the Rohingya ethnic minority in the country’s Rakhine State.

I wonder if Dublin will have the concern to do so. The more the merrier.

I'm hoping they do but I fear it may all be brushed under the carpet like most of these high profile situations

The problem is, she's trying to deny something we have both video evidence in and satellite evidence in. If it was just word of mouth then I don't know if stripping her title would hold ground.

By her denying the human rights violations that are occurring under her watch and refusing to do anything at all to stop the ethnic cleansing going on in her country, is shows she is utterly unworthy of such an award.

I commend Oxford for making such a decision, I don't think it will mean much to the woman who has shown no remorse for the lives being lost, the families being torn apart, and the homes destroyed, but even a little bit of recognition of her despicable actions (or inaction) will shed some light to more people.

I agree, that the symbolic withdrawal of the Freedom of Oxford might mean little to Aung San Suu Kyi but it might have some effect. While in England, she associated with the ruling class and seemed to enjoy her status as an Oxford scholar. Being a class-conscious snob, the reputation of Oxford and its university carries some weight. She will not like losing her iconic respectability among the English.

At this point I don't care if she doesn't like it, if she wants to keep any kind of favorable status she needs to get her act together and start actually addressing the mass ethnic cleansing going on in her country. I think the English elites need to put pressure on her too but until they actually have something to lose, which they most likely do not, Oxford's stance may be the only option.

I believe many in the West never knew Aung San Suu Kyi and were distracted by her years in house arrest by the military regime. People should not get prizes and awards for being under arrest even by a junta. Now the world sees her for what she is, a smug condescending racist.
