Were our Founders conservatives?
Our Founders were in a revolution against conservative England, derived many of their positions from other nations in which the people overthrough conservative power structures (France for one), and included a whole section on civil rights when they didn't have to. None of those things would be possible under the type of conservative choke the current US conservatives want to do. 1

Well, honestly, the Founding Fathers were extremely progressive for their time period, and would still be considered progressive today. They arguably created the first democratic republic, and gave inalienable rights to its citizens. (How you describe citizen was up to the government. In this case, until 1865 it was whites.) They overthrew the British Constitutional Monarchy in the colonies, and revolutionism is a progressive disruption of power. So they were very progressive. Now, anti-federalist versus federalist is a different matter. (Note that those were the original us government political parties. I know, wig party and such were prior to the establishment of the U.S. Constitution in 1788. (Fairly sure...)) In nowaday's terms: probably. But for their time, they were very forward-thinking. The Republican Party was formed as a quite left wing (for the times) party, and the Democrats were actually the pro-slavery party of the times. But no, they would have been considered, many of them, to be rather radical in their day, as would many of the early Presidents. Lincoln, for instance, was considered as such. 1

Of course they were. Secularism was unheard of, the pledge has "Under God" in it, the Bill of Rights says we got those rights from our creator, and the nation was nearly 100% Christian in demographics. Nationalism won us our independence from Britain, homosexuality was openly declared sin, there was no vast group of migrants to pander to politically, the Bible is still what we give oaths on, abortion was unthinkable, and they were most certainly pro gun rights. |
