There are ethnic Jews (technically semites related to a line of religious Jews), who aren't followers of the Judaistic religion. The same way there are atheist Arabs or atheist Persians. Yes, Jews aren't a "race", but many people believe them to be, and many identify as such. At any rate, atheists who come from Jewish heritage wouldn't have been spared by the Nazis.
