What Does the Republican Party Have To Do In Order To Gain High Office In 2012?

The Republican party has suffered losses all the way around since the last election.  What do you think caused this and what would they have to do in order to gain back seats in Congress or even gain back the White House in 2012?

They have to stop limiting progressive movements. I know it's technically not Conservative to be against progressive movements, but the Republican Party was a Progressive Party up until FDR.

And even after that, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan and Bush Senior all proved to be Progressive, yet Conservative, presidents.

Bush Junior has been Conservative on the Progressive movement, in that, he was against it. He banned gay marriage and fought a useless War on Drugs. The fact is, Republicans were the most successful when they REBELLED against current standards. But now that they focus more and more on being Socially Conservative, they're losing touch with the people.

List of the greatest presidents in History who were also Republican:

Lincoln - Focused on maintaining the Union and supporting big business against immigration floods. Also... freed the slaves. All were considered Liberal back then.

Teddy Roosevelt - Creator of the Progressive Party (Bull Moose Republicans) where he fought against monopolies in order to make a more balanced market while still supporting big business. The thing is, as a Capitalist he found competition to be the most important part of it. Also passed environmental laws.

Eisenhower - Sent the troops to protect the first integrated southern students. Also was the president in the happiest times, even though they also fought Communism. It was the error of good feeling. Everyone liked Ike.

Reagan - Shrank government while increasing the military. Even started the Star Wars program which helped create GPS and laser guided missiles. Basically, much of what the military enjoys today is much thanks to Reagan.

Bush Senior - Fought the most successful war in American history, with very low casualties along with major victory.

Ya see, if Republicans would just focus on what has always made them great and stop with this stupid banning of gay marriage shit, they would be much more successful and be able to continue their PROGRESSION.

As you know, I'm a Democrat but I have to agree with your logic on this one Pyggy. The only exception would be Bush senior and his little war where no one showed up on the other side when they got there, lol! Unless they can beat Obama and he stays true to himself and his campaign promises I don't think they can beat him in round two.

They need to get their s*&# together. The Republican party needs to unify itself under someone who is a real conservative and not a moderate, a recent poll showed that 40 percent of Americans recognize themselves as conservatives. They really need a unified base in order to win and they need to fight and stand up up to the Democrats. They need balls.

I think you have it backwards.

They need to unify behind someone who is not a "real conservative"

at least not by the definition of the last 8 to 16 years depending who you ask.

A real conservative has turned into someone who is overly christian (fine, until they mix it with policy, which they do) anti-gay, pro-big energy, anti-intellectual, anti-compromise.

You find a smart fiscal conservative, who is more libertarian than republican right wing, and by some miracle get that person through the republican religious right drenched primaries, and if somehow none of Obama's plans work, that person will at least have a chance.

But I mean, that would mean standing up to the likes of Rush. It would mean compromising with other human beings who are citizens of this country also, who don't want religion in politics, want equal rights for everyone, and want someone who will actually compromise with all elected officials instead of putting up a wall and ignoring every other point of view.

Is it possible right now?

Probably not. But you guys can hope.

I would rather see the republican party die than support the progressive movement.

Unless the conservatives would leave and make their own party. I would be all for that.

Then the republican party would really suck.

When you speak of conservatives and the rate of 40% don't you think there are Democrats mixed in there as well? Not every Democrat is a liberal!

"The Republican party needs to unify itself under someone who is a real conservative and not a moderate"

You need to stop listening to Rush Limbaugh. One of the primary disadvantages of the Republican Party in the 2008 presidential election was the nomination of Sarah Palin. She was a far-right, religious candidate who really frightened many Republican moderates and independents. The main problem with the Republican Party right now is the divide between mainstream conservatives and the religious right. Yet you somehow think that getting a more extreme candidate will lead to better results.

"You need to stop listening to Rush Limbaugh."

You need to stop telling people what they need to do.

The Republican Party is dead. It consists of two main factions- libertarians and Christians- neither of which make up a majority within the party to nominate candidates or within the nation to elect candidates. Furthermore the ideologies of the two factions are mutually exclusive. The Republicans cannot fully satisfy the one without alienating the other.

You cannot simply say the Republicans have to unify under a real conservative without knowing what a conservative is- and a real conservative won’t be a libertarian or anyone else who rejects faith and family. If there is to be a 3rd party spawned by the Republicans it will be a party for people of faith who are sick and tired of having their votes be taken for granted by the likes of McCain, Bush, Dole and Reagan who promise the moon and deliver squat.

Libertarians are seperate political party. I know several libertarians and they all go to church and have strong family values. What you are saying is stereotypes. Not all Republicans are Christian. That is like saying all atheists are democrats. Reagan was one the most conservative Presidents in History.

I think tugman is right on one level. They do need to get their shit together. But I think one thing republicans have to do is shake the image of Sarah Palin being their savior or something. Get rid of her being the new face, new power, new voice of the republican party. Sarah Palin is as dumb as a brick and really knows nothing about politics. The republicans can't possible hope to regain the majority on capitol hill, or the presidency with Ms. Wolverine Barbie running them.

Wow Jake, I'm shocked you said you don't know what to do but let's do it. You are one of the staunchest Rebublicans on this site and you don't know what to do? I'm really surprised at that.

Uh-Oh...Sarah Palin is resigning her office as of July 26, 2009. This is troublesome as it leaves her open to speculation as to what she'll do next. Scary prospect!
