What "Fag" Means

Well, I've always used the term as just a simple pejorative, like asshole or douchebag, but there have been some gays on this site that got all pissed off when I used it (guess they're slow with the times).

Anyone who knows me knows that I don't hate gays for being gay or blacks for being blacks.  I hate people for being douchebags (which are a lot of people), so I call a LOT of people "fags".

Now, it would make sense if fag was always used as a term to mean "gay" that gays would be rightly upset every time the term was used, but it hasn't.  For however long it has meant gay, it was used much longer to describe a bitter old woman or just someone who gathers firewood.  This is something I always knew, and I've even used it as a defense for myself on this site.  I am very politically incorrect and use other pejorative terms for gays outside of this site (i'm not the attacking kind on this site) just to piss people off.  I say Nigger, FudgePacker, Kike, Spic, Whop, White Trash, Chinc, Cunt, and all kinds of terms that piss off certain groups of people mainly because swearing doesn't have the the same effect it did 50 years ago (you can thank shock jocks and George Carlin for that).  But here I'm careful to just use terms like fag, asshole, douchebag and etc, and that's only for describing third parties.

But now, South Park has made an episode defining a fag as an annoying, incosiderate person who usually rides a Harley Motorcycle.  So hopefully limousine liberals (and other fags) will finally get the message on what fag means to the younger, politically incorrect generation.

On a side note, has anyone else noticed how political correctness might be starting to die off with the younger crowd?  Or is it just the people I hang out with?

The point of an insult is to push someone from the ingroup to the outgroup. They are quick and easy ways of saying, "You are not one of us. You don't matter as much as I do." There's no better way to establish that dynamic than by exploiting prejudice. And the strongest prejudices are about race, gender, and sexuality.

Why do you think the word "fag" is such a potent insult? Because it's connected to the word "gay". Conservatives at best frown upon gays and at worst hate them outright. Many moderates and liberals also harbor prejudices they don't like to think about. By calling someone a fag you are exploiting these prejudices (perhaps subconsciously) to give your insult more of a punch.

You seem to know a shit load about my subconscious. Even more than me. Holy shit, are you a fuckin' psychic?

I mean, I thought this whole time I just used the word fag as a basic insult, like douchebag or asshole, but to thanks to your ability to know me more than me, I now realize that I am subconsciously a homophobe who merely wishes to spread hate.

I am not a pioneer of political incorrectness and freedom of speech. Just some Conservative homopohobe.

I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to the people who hear the word.

I know you use the word as a generic insult. I'm telling you why the word is effective.

I sense this is not going to be a productive conversation...

Fag means gay. I use the both words to insult. Sometimes I'm actually calling them fag/gay, sometimes I'm just using it as a cuss word. Same as all them other things you're talking about. I feel insulted cause you left Paki out.. but ok. ;).

I think it depends on the crowd. Everybody I'm with doesn't give a shit about political correctness, except for a couple of those annoying black people and a few white people.

So you will say "fag" but not "nigger"? Why is that?

Because fag has meant many things, instead of just it's one most recent and most negative definition?

Yes, words are constantly being redefined and reapplied. But there are many people who still use the word in the same way many people still use the word "nigger" negatively towards African Americans.

Given time, the word "fag" may grow to mean something other than a negative slur for gay, but as of now, it still carries that meaning.

Unless you live in the cartoon town of South Park, Colorado.

well, if you read the whole thing you will know that I say both nigger and fag.

it's just when I say nigger, there really is only one meaning of that, which it has meant for about 400 years. It's a pejorative for a black person.

fag meaning gay has only been around for a few decades and has quickly been adapted as a typical slander, no longer just referring to gays.

and South Park is more than just a cartoon, it's a philosophy. Refer to my other topic on how everything South Park says is right (Libertarians tend to be right about everything when they have their own show, Penn and Teller are another good example).

I read the whole thing. You said that you say nigger, but not here on CD. But you do say fag here on CD.

And, luckily, I don't know you outside of this website.

And fag has meant "gay" as a negative very recently. Many people still use or view it as having that definition.

You can have the opinion tht South Park is meaningful, but that is your opinion, not mine, certainly not the entire world's.

It's my opinion that useing those hateful slurs, no matter how you mean them, is insensitive and rude.

This one is Iffy for me. I still use it as a homosexual term, but mainly towards people who aren't homosexual. Like I'm not gay, and it REALLY pisses me off when I'm called a Fag. So when I use it, it's not that I'm calling the person gay, but more like putting them into that Taboo group where they don't want to be included. It's the same as calling a white person a Nigger, or even a black person a Cracker. Nigger and Cracker still mean what they mean, but has the same effect when you use it on a different race.

They are both bad, Joe. They mean the same thing, and they can both be taken negatively by a considerable amount of people.

Fag is derived from faggot-gatherer, a pejorative term used to describe a worthless person that collected faggots (a bundle of sticks used to kindle a fire) faggot-gatherers would sell the kindling to people gathered to witness a burning at the stake.

A FAG IS A CIGARETTE. BUT REALLY IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU APPLY THE WORD AS TO WETHER OR NOT YOU OFFEND A PERSON. IVE HEARD PLENTY OF GAY PERSONS USING THE WORD THEMSELVES.MAYBE IT COULD BE AN ABREVIATION FOR FREE-AGE-GUY. but yes it is commonly applied to gay persons in a derogatory manner and can be taken offensively.
