What are some of the ramification of gay marriage?

If the government were to use the word "marriage" for homosexual unions, then would churches be required to perform homosexual wedding ceremonies?  If so, wouldn't this mean that the government is telling the church what it can and cannot do?  Is it a good idea for the government to get into the "business" of religion?  And if the churches are forced to perform homosexual weddings, would gay couples automatically be accepted by the congregation?

Add New Argument

The government should to stop using the word "marriage" and replace it with the words "civil union" and have those 2 words apply to heterosexual and homosexual unions. This would give homosexual unions the same "rights" as heterosexual unions.

However, If the government were to take this advice, the churches would still be able to deny to perform homosexual wedding ceremonies. In this case gays don't miss out on any "rights" because a wedding ceremony [performed by a representative of a given religion] is not a "right."

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; for I've not come to praise marriage but to bury it in the anals of time.... I mean, annals.... annals of time ;)

Damn it! I can't even take my own debate seriously ;)

But seriously folks, let chuck the word marriage and replace it with something else that is more inclusive.... more progressive. Let the church keep using this archaic term while the rest of us stop arguing amongst ourselves and move on.

I agree Joe...choose a term, just one term and have it apply to everyone so there can be no argument as to rights. They will all be the same. I believe that even the Constitution refers to this as a Civil Union.

Now to the ramifications of Gay Marriage!

1. People do not understand such a union

2. People do not understand that sex is a natural thing that occurs in all people.

3. People will tend to turn-off initially when a child becomes involved.

4. People may treat you with disdain or be horrified.

5. People will try and make to believe HELL awaits you.

6. People will have to come to terms with their prejudiced behaviors...or they may simply shun you.

7. People will not allow their children near yours for fear that Homosexuality is a Virus one can catch and not recover from.

I'm certain there are more ramifications but I cannot come up with those right now.

Side: Civil Union or Marriage is OK with me

The 7 points you listed are a list of what some heterosexuals do towards homosexuals. What I was after was more like, what would happen if homosexuals were allowed to use the word marriage instead of civil union. I think that it is unfortunate but even if homosexuals were allowed to use the word marriage instead of civil union, the seven points you mentioned will not go away. Even if the government stopped using the word marriage and strictly used the words civil union for both heterosexual and homosexual unions, the 7 points would still not go away.

Having said all of that, schools now a days are teaching children to be more tolerant and, with time, those seven points will no longer be an issue.

That leaves the church's position on the subject. What do gays think about religious wedding ceremonies?

the government shouldn't force churches to marry anyone, but they also shouldn't be deciding who can and can not get married.

My view on government and marriage is mainly for property and custody rights. we live in an open time and many gay couples want to have rights to each other. if the religious right is so worked up about sanctity of marriage, then stop making marriage a government thing and just a private thing.

the government should just deal with civil unions, and that's it. gay or straight, w/e.
