What are the benefits and ramifications of terraforming foreign planets?

For those of you who don't know what terraforming is, it's basically changing specific things about a planet to make it habitable for humans.

1. It wold be freakin' cool

2. There are no downsides. The planet was just sitting their not doing shit, floating around in space.

To a certain extent. Not like taking samples or putting chemicals subtances or basicly changing the whole enviorment or climate and drasticly changing the planet itself. That could actually be very dangerous.

I know this may be almost impossible but its like tampering with nature. You dont really know what can be inside and if not extremely careful ,which im sure they still are, but still, it could possibly cause a deadly reaction. The combination of an unknown surface( when they first discovered it) plus a chemichal doesnt always mix very good. Who knows?

How could it be dangerous?

Go 15 lightyears away from Earth, find a dusty old rock, then cool it, give it atmosphere and animals and plants, then move in.

No damage done, just life introduced to a new world.
