I have this problem right now which is why I'm looking for another job. In this case I can simply say nothing to her. Literally. She takes everything I say and warps it to some BS attack against her so I simply do not address or acknowledge her in any way. Sometimes when you have a job you need to act professional even when no one around you does.

What do you say to a raving asshole who has power over your job?

Exactly-- this is the problem with unjustified, unchecked hierarchy in the workplace. I am having this exact discussion with WinstonC elsewhere, just now.

Good topic.

"unjustified, unchecked hierarchy in the workplace"

The workplace hierarchy is justified by the fact that the employer provided everything necessary for you to do your job. If you don't need their resources, connections, knowledge etc. then you can simply work for yourself.

As for being unchecked, the employee-employer relationship is controlled by law. This is why employers are not allowed, for one example, to abuse this relationship to coerce employees into sex acts.

I repeat;- people don't do what's expected,

They only do what's inspected|.

Whether we're talking about the rank status within the military or the line management structure in commerce or industry there will always an absolute necessity for the BOSS who will usually be unpopular.

Everybody knows how to run the company better than the boss, until you put them in the driving seat and they get to see the big picture.

This is when they recognise the stupidity of their ill judged and ignorance induced criticisms.

Whilst resentment at having to be supervised and given direction is understandable it doesn't detract from the well proven fact that fair, but firm supervision is essential.

Most employees, not all, but most will take short cuts which may jeopardize their company's health and safety policy as well as the quality of their employer's service or product.

Disciplines and accounting checks are vital to keep dishonesty under control

LETTING THE TAIL WAG THE DOG IS THE FAST LANE TO BANKRUPTCY.

I had a reputation for talking FACT no matter who I was talking to. I had a plant manager try to fire me 7 times over about ten years. He lost every time. In the end I think I was about the last person he would fire. (I got him and the company out of several expensive messes).

Another boss, (a German "Geshaftsfurher") called me on the carpet for giving a customer "bad advice". About a year down the road my "bad advice" proved to be what the customer should have followed ... he wasted about $300,000! I sent a letter to my Geshaftsfurher pointing this out. He never replied, but, I outlasted him on the job. Seems I was to outspoken in all three of my jobs, but was never fired .. (never worked for Trump ;-). I kinda enjoyed the conflict ... the only thing Trump and I have in common! :-)

Oh shut up ya fuckwad. Where does this come into play? Where? He either got fired before he could get the chance to get promoted or he just liked his job.
