Personally I think the mass extinction of humans will be caused by "germs." Remember, the four main types of germs are bacteria, fungi, viruses, and Protozoa. Ebola would be an example of a virus, and something along the lines of a bacterial infection would be the Bubonic plague. The Bubonic plague was one of the most devastating conditions in human history and killed nearly 30-60% of Europe's population. And I'm sure you know how bad the Ebola epidemic is right now don't you? 1

i would agree. other than the obvious ourselves, germs seem the most formidable threat. it seems that bacteria is rapidly evolving so that we get an outbreak of something or other every ten years or so. it may not always be deadly (aka swine flu) but on the off chance one happens to become deadly we could perhaps even lose a significant percentage of the global population. meanwhile drugs seem to work well at the moment and cover a wide range of things so far, but most drugs are developed in response to a real threat rather than an impending one, and do not 'evolve' as quickly. ebola is a good example, it is supposedly resistant to heat (fever) due to being carried in bats during flight (they heat up to a little over 40 degrees) and also seems to elude white blood cells. doesn't look very promising really. 1
