What is Pluto?

Are there 8 planets or 9?
↑ Hide Debate Description

Two years ago, Pluto was demoted. Our solar system was declared as only having EIGHT actual planets and numerous "plutoids" or "trans-Neptunian dwarf planet" or "dwarf planet." To this day, experts cannot agree. How do you feel about this conundrum?

Pluto is still considered a planet albeit a "Dwarf Planet" along with Ceres, an Asteroid which was also reclassified and Eris which was labeled a "scattered disk object" which, in some ways resembles an Asteroid belt. The term Dwarf Planet is a bit of a misnomer since these are not a "subset" of Planets themselves but in a different category altogether. Scientists are still debating the differences and definitions of a Plutoid, Dwarf Planet and Planet!

Pluto is a Disney character!

It has been a planet for years and years...so, all of a sudden it isn't a planet???

What is that all about?

I think it is still a planet.

Who knows what is making it have a different orbit. It could be heavier on one side...could have been hit by asteroids who knows what goes on out there. We have not seen it all.

Earth is very lucky, that it has been a long time since it has been really hit.

I don't want to hurt Pluto's feelings.

Having said that, what the difference between a mountain and hill? A rock, a boulder and a pebble? I mean, at what point do they stop being one and become the other?

yes, pluto is, as we define a planet now, too small. however, it is of historic importance and i think affection to leave pluto as the smallest planet. if we wish to add new objects as other small planets, such as charon, that causes no problems.

let's leave pluto a bit of dignity! :P

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) issued a formal definition of planet, one that led to Pluto's boot from planethood.

The IAU provided three criteria an object must meet to reach planet status:

A planet is a celestial body that

1. It orbits around the sun.

2. It has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and

3. It has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.

So just because Pluto decides to be a little different from the rest of the solar system and not conform to the other planet's orbital ways it doesn't get to be a planet? That is low!
