What is the Root of Human Nature?

Helping Others

Side Score: 4
VS.

Helping Yourself

Side Score: 4

The roots are both, human nature is driven by both individual gain and pack mentality.

Side: Helping Others

However people will only help a pack of they will gain something from it whether it be emotional or physical. It will always have to be for the individual on the inside.

Side: Helping Others

In a sense, yes I would definitely suspect there are many people who act on for their individual gain but play it out as acting for a pack mentality. But there definitely are people who for their pack (or whatever entity their loyalty lies with) and not for them selves. For instance, a kamikaze pilot has nothing to gain from crashing in to a ship, but their nation does, so they do it.

Side: Helping Others

The best form for survival, though there are a lot of selfish people in our world.

Side: Helping Others

This one is pretty obvious isn't it? If it was helping others, then why do we have wars, crime, and corruption?

I believe at the root we want to help others but we have a shallow surface feeling of wanting to help ourselves. Those that went to extremes to help themselves, Rasputin, Sade, all those guys when insane and on top of it were described as infant-like.

It's natural to help our selves. We have a pyramid of needs, and on that pyramid friendship is listed, but only after food, and shelter has been met. Helping others is usually done if helping yourself is also achieved.

The individual came before the family, right? I'm not sure how all of that works... but I assume that humans or whatever we evolved from were initially more worried about their own personal welfare.
