I'm thinking that I should chase him down, attack him (defend myself), take what he has with him back into the store, call the police, and show his tab to the police officers when they arrive and request that he be jailed for shoplifting.

Probably not worth the risk. He could have a knife, you never know.

I will have four people, baseball bats, golf clubs, and a brick for the driver's windshield. I'm not worried about a knife.

Sounds good to me, go for it, and let us know how it goes.

Don't end up going to jail yourselves. But the police probably won't be responsive enough to catch him if you let him get away. And you don't want to unlawfully detain him, so you need to wait until he's left teh store with the beer before you do anything. No need to go getting all worked up, hurt, or jailed, over a 12$ item that doesn't belong to you anyway. Before you really consider doing anything, consult the owner. If shit goes awry in your little bust, he may be civilly liable for any injuries, etc. For many stores, like Wal-Mart, the potential of million-dollar settlements dictates their loss-prevention policies moreso than actual loss-prevention. It sounds like this guy would be a case where it's no question, but if you're really trying to help your employer, ask him, he may not like the idea. But then again you may just be wanting to play vigilante.

If you're not a partner in the store, it's not your beer. If the owner doesn't care, why should you? If you can convince the cops to set up an ambush, then do that. If you notice that the individual always takes the same brand, refill some empty bottles of that brand with water and have some fun messing with the individual. ;)

I'm certain you would say the same thing if it was your gas station/convenience store, huh Joe? I have no idea how much this person takes...just one for himself, a six-pack, a 12 pack or what but the money being lost is your responsibility when you're on duty there. It doesn't matter who else doesn't care but you should! It speaks to ones character, honesty and integrity. I would call the police and try to set him up for next week. If he comes in the same night and just about the same time every week then you can bet he won't change that unless he has to for some odd reason. The end result is the plain clothes policemen are there to catch him in the act and you are not involved. Does he do this with people in the store or when there's no one there? You say that he seems innocent but you really never know. He could be carrying and that would be too dangerous of a situation to put yourself in. Messing around with someone who is bold enough to walk into a convenience store/gas station and simply take what he wants is a very bold move. It sounds like fun but perhaps you'll be sorry if you mess with him.

I work here every night and 12.5 hours on sunday, it's a large part of my income to be honest. I usually have around $2000 that I can access at any given time of the day if someone were to hold up the store. So it's a big part of my income and it's also the biggest threat to my personal security. Like I said, I have access to over $2000, and this is the downtown area of a city of more than 400,000 people. The reason I feel like I should do something, is that I am there every night, and this one asshole comes in, when everyone else is struggling to pay, and he grabs beer, of all things, a luxury item, and runs with it. I don't think that the worst people in society should have things when the better people play by the rules that I too follow, as a supporter of community, and TAKE opportunities from them like that. It's not only disrespectful to me, but the owners who are christian koreans too. They don't have to deal with it directly, as I do, and these people down here shouldn't get the idea that MY shitty little store is a good place to demonstrate their civil disobedience. Punishment is immanent, but how should I execute the punishment? Should I feed my anger by dealing with it myself, or should I depend on a pretty slow and insecure reactionary organization...

It is very frustrating to me, too, when it seems like some people think that they are above the rules. It is not like when Katrina hit and some people were stealing water and diapers because they needed them to survive! This is like those people in New Orleans who were stealing the TVs... who do they think that they are? I agree that you don't want the word to get out that the store you work at is an easy target, because things could get really ugly really fast then. I would talk to the manager again, set up the video cameras to make sure they get the guy well, and then call the police. The same type of person who regularly steals from the same store is the same type of person who could do you harm, and none of us want that!

We already have cameras, but since my boss has no real spine, all he does is make a really really bad quality print out of the person and post it on the door with "Thief" printed above it. Not helpful in this situation. The boss is never there at night, and wouldn't do anything if were there, because he's just not the type of person to take real action. I feel like I know this society, I know what I want from it, and this type of theft is something that you cannot just make a law against and expect people to follow. They are planning to escape. It's not elusive or meant to be undetected. The go in thinking that we will know, and now, because they've done it maybe three times, they are probably getting the idea that not only do we know, but we will not take action. Now, I had a friend a while back, in fact a few of them, that have had things stolen from their houses, and they called the police, and in one case the person thought someone was still in the house. The police never showed up. The only time they did was for a grand theft auto, and it was only to have the owner of the car file paperwork. I cannot trust the police here to do anything about it. Maybe though, I can call the sharif department, and ask them to come sit in the alley one Friday and Saturday. We know, roughly, what the vehicle looks like, and it's make and model. I can give them a print out of the guys face, if they think they match, haul them off. This is unlikely to happen though, and like I said, my boss is a wiener. Maybe instead of attacking the assailant I should just collect all of the information that I can, and file a useless report. They might be doing this elsewhere too. It would feel so good though to trap the rat and make him pay. Take what he thought was his, and hand him his $90 tab and tell him to pay it while the police are (supposedly) on the way. The only problem is, if the driver of the car comes into the equation once they realize that the runner is not coming back.

I don't know. It looks like Bradford could handle himself. Look at all those muscles! Besides, he's not alone and I've seen Bad Boys and those criminals are not too bright. Bradford, just tazer the SOB.
